Surplus ammo in a tactical rifle

Hello,

Maybe this sort of question has been asked before, but I couldn't find it with search, so I'll just ask it.

I'm a beginning rifle shooter who just acquired his first rifle (a vintage FN 30-11 I managed to get cheap. I've made an old post about it). So far I've been shooting 147 grain Sellier & Bellot .308's from it, but at around 70 Euro cents a round, these are fairly pricey, especially considering some unforseen bills having left me short on cash lately. Now I've been looking at some cheaper options, and my eye has fallen on both MEN and DAG surplus rounds. Now my question is, would these be suitable for a 'high-end' tactical rifle like that? I only shoot at 50 and a 100 meters so far, so accuracy isn't really my concern, but some people at my local club seem convinced that those rounds would just wear out my barrel.

Is this a valid concern, or is using decent quality surplus a fairly common thing to do at non-long distance ranges like that?

Thank you,

-Viktor,

Re: Surplus ammo in a tactical rifle

I have used MEN-85 loads in large volumes through my .308 rifles, primariy an M1A, with no difficulties, other than less-than-stellar accuracy.

These days, however, I no longer own any .308's.

I've found Portugese surplus 308 to be reasonably accurate for your type of shooting. No worries on wearing out your barrel with copper jacketed surplus ammo.

The DAG with AB22 mark is good ammo. Honestly, even though it is less expensive the bullet type is awesome for self defense type situations. The round fragments with amazing results.
