BERN, Switzerland, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- A Swedish driver caught speeding at 180 mph in Switzerland could face a world-record fine of $1 million for the infraction, prosecutors say.
The 37-year-old man, whose name was not reported, was driving his Mercedes SLS AMG at 105 mph over the speed limit, the BBC reported Friday. The location and date of the alleged infraction were not disclosed.
Under Swiss law a fine is determined by the speed recorded and by the driver's wealth.
A Swiss driver holds the current world record fine, $290,000, imposed in January, the BBC said.
"Nothing can justify a speed of 290km/h (180 mph)," police spokesman Benoit Dumas said. "It is not controllable."
The driver's car has been impounded.
