guess this ok to ask here. i am looking at a swfa ss 5-20x50 hd ffp non il on another site. best used i have seen is about $900. i think i saw one here back a bit for $850. it's part of a package rig but i'm trying to price the pieces one at a time. thanks for any input.

I would be looking hard at the Steiner P4xi 4-16x56 at that price point.
What do you think is better about the Steiner than the SWFA? My one foray into the Steiner world was the much more expensive T5xi 5-25, and the glass was pitifully bad - much worse than my SWFA HD 5-20. But I've not seen the P4xi in person, so I can't directly compare.

I sold one in excellent condition for $850 shipped not long ago. That may be the one you were referring to. I still have two illuminated 5-20x50 Hd scopes. They work well. If you want a illuminated one with a throw lever and you are willing to throw in a little bit more to your budget PM me and I would let one go. Maybe.

I prefer the turrets and reticle, those are more important to me than the glass.

Makes sense. Reticle is important no doubt, and if you don't like the mil-quad then the SWFA isn't for you.

My sensitivity to turret quality is really different at different price points. At $1k, I expect decent and that's what the SWFA is - decent but not awesome.

Good point, and sometimes I think we get too hung up over turrets. Audible turrets don't matter when others are shooting and you're wearing earpro. As long as its easy to dial and the everything lines up, they're good to go.

@wade2big: How's the tracking in them?
