Ok so I am thinking i could switch to the scenar keeping one load throughout my barrel life instead of chasing the lands with the 140VLD. Also having more space in the magazine.
My main question is can I just drop the 130 on my current charge or do i need to re-develop this load?

Any comments on my line of thinking.
PS i mostly shoot F-class open with my 260 but would like to make it out to more tactical shoots with this rig

I run both 139 scenars and 140VLD with 44grn H4350 and have been getting 2835fps with 13ES on 10 shot strings with a 26" 1-8 5c broughton. I dont know what powder or charge weight your running but maybe this will help finding what the 139 likes

I'm running the 140vlds on top of 47.5grn H4831sc and seeing some reduction in accuracy as my barrel wears. This puts me in the position to either chase the lands with my load or change to the scenar which should not be so finicky.

Re: Switching 139 scenar HPBT for berger 140 VLD

I have run the 140 VLD, 139 Scenar, 140 AMAX, 142 SMK, and 140 BTHP bullets in my .260s.

Per your comments, accuracy with the Berger 140 VLD was OAL dependent, and I did not want to chase the lands, or run into a load that was over mag length, so I gave up on them quick.

The Lapua 139 Scenars were great, they did not care about OAL and made the jump with no problem. I actually shot my best groups with those bullets. After about a year shooting them, I tried some others and decided to move on because of the cost.

Next came the Hornady 140 AMAX and 140 BTHP, along with the Sierra 142 MK. They all did very well, but I decided on the Hornady 140 BTHP because it grouped better than the AMAX and the cost was less than the Sierras. The performance of that bullet in my rifle was not 100% what the Scenars were but it was close enough in my book.

In reality for me, I could run any of the bullets above, except the VLDs, at mag length and be hard pressed most of the time to see a difference in performance. For me it came down to cost, and having quick and consistent access to the bullets.

I run all of my .260 loads using H4350 somewhere around 42.5 grains. When I switched bullets in the loads, I ran the load development a few grains below and above 42.5 and found the accuracy nodes to be slightly different but very close on each one.

The Berger 6.5mm Hybrid should be out any day, they have been doing the testing on it, and I would expect it to hit in early spring if no problems come up. It should be a good mix of VLD performance with the ability to make the jump and not be OAL dependent. Big issue with them will probably be cost, not sure if the gains in performance will justify it or not?

Best of Luck,
M Richardson

Jesus christ, who chambered your barrel if your running 139s with 44gr of H4350

I've found nearly identical results as captrichardson. I've not tried the Bergers but can switch between the Sierras, Scenars, or Hornady bullets with the same powder charges and not changing the seating stem in the die and feel comfortable taking them to one of the long range matches with only a very slight tweaking needed to center up on a target. The pistols like 43gr of H4350 and the new rifle likes both 42.5gr H4350 and also 44gr H4350 and so far the Hornady 140 match BTHP is shooting the best in all of them.

Yeah, the BC for the Scenar is 0.578 at 35$ per 100 and the amax is G1 BC of 0.585 at 29$ per 100. Yes the BC will make a difference but I now have 400 of the 140VLD loaded with a rifle losing accuracy because of barrel wear. Also, I ended up having to hand feed in my last match because the VLD's were catching in my magazine because of OAL. I really dont have time to go rebuild my load constantly to chase the lands besides having no more room in my magazine.
