T-bolt issues ;(

I recently purchased a Browning T-bolt in .22 long rifle
however when i first took it to the range it misfired the majority of trigger pulls, about 4 misfires for every fire.
I removed the bolt for close inspection and noticed the firing pin appears as if it has been filed or chipped reducing the length of it, any ideas of how this could have happened?

Re: T-bolt issues ;(

How do fired cases look?
Much dent?
Many rimfires are designed to prevent dry firing damage; the FP never gets closer than 005-.010" from barrel.
If, for some reason the bolt doesn't lock up tight, excess headspace prevents reliable ignition.
Recent productio? If new, contact Browning CS.
Also try various ammo.

tried 4 brands of ammunition,
the firing pin just barely nicks the cartridge, it should be closer to the center

Re: T-bolt issues ;(

keep us posted as my mates 17 hmr t bolt started doing this a few months back, only it was more like 1 in 10 would misfire/not fire, then upon ejection, the projectile would stay in the barrel and have to be knocked out with a cleaning rod. not good.........

tried the ammo in my savage 17 and no probs.....

i just recently gave his bolt a full degrease and clean out as well as scrapped all the gunk out of all nocks and crannies in the action. hasnt had a click of death yet, but every now and then there will be a click...........bang but they still hit the rabbit he was aiming at so.......

after the case is ejected leaving the proj in the tube, i tried lighting the powder with a lighter, and it barely fizzled let alone caught fully....

time will tell, but this suddenly just started happening after about a year of solid service and a few thousand rounds downrange.

if yor gun is new and is misfiring at all, first, change ammo, then next ring browning mate,

22lr ammo is known for having the odd failier to fire, especilly with cheap stuff.

so yeah, change ammo bud, then see what goes fom there.

good luck mate, the tbolts never did much for me, but hope yours turns out all good, also, make sure you keep it oiled well as my mates 2 tbolts both rust at the drop of a hat, espec under the barrel and reciever in between the stock.

jimi ( Australia)

Read your post about your mates Tbolt rusting under the barrel.

Question: Are these older Tbolts??

If so they may be the "salt tbolts". Browning contracted a south American supplier of wood for stocks. The way the wood was cured was to use salt to leach the moisture out of the wood. Unfortunately the salt never left the wood, so rusting of barrel and action where it contacted the wood is common.

Told to me by a 40 year collector of firearms, whom I rely on and trust. he says to look at the barrel/wood junction before buying. Rust there will definately devalue a collector piece. (He advises to not buy one of these.)

Re: T-bolt issues ;(

sorry mate, both his are new ones, the 22 is timber and the 17 is synthetic... bolts on both were the first thing i noticed to have rust spots, so i took down both rifles and they are rusting....

cheers, jim
