On a recent range trip, a couple guys had Tactical Solutions AR dedicated uppers there. I don't know what lower they were using, but of the couple of hundred rounds they went through each, I never once saw a jam.

I didn't get a chance to talk to them much about the specifics and what they thought of the accuracy but looked like a lot of fun.

Anyone have any feed back?

Can anyone compare Tactical Solutions dedicated uppers to Spikes?
Anyone else make dedicated .22 rimfire uppers rather than conversion kits?

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

Thanks,

I checked out CMMG and it looks like it has a chamber adapter where Tactical Solutions looks like it has a dedicated .22 Long Rifle chamber.

Anyone know if Spikes had a dedicated .22 Long Rifle chamber? or does it have a chamber adapter?

again
thanks

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

I have 2 dedicated 22 uppers, a Tac-Sol LT, and a Ciener Conversion, similat to what Spikes is using, but it not a Spikes.

Spikes uses a Ciener design, but they chrome plate it, which should help a lot. On a dedicated Ciener upper, the chamber adapter is machined off, leaving a sleeve, which fits over top of the barrel extension, and aligns the bolt assembly with the barrel. This is a dedicated conversion done for me by a friend using a Ciener kit:

ar22smallb.jpg

This is a 20" A2 upper, patterened after a National Match upper, complete with full floating handguards, NM rear sight, etc. We used a used Anchutz barrel (doing it again, I would have used a new barrel) Its accurate- -shoots 9's and 10's from 50' slinged up prone with the right ammo. It has a jamb every 50 shots or so, but its still breaking in. The rails are quite rough. Spikes plated rails and bolt would probably help with this a lot.

This is the bolt from my Tac-Sol LT. As you can see, it doesn't us the sleeve and barrel extension that the Ciener uses. There are notches in the barrel extension that the rails fit into, which center the bolt. The bolt is made of stainless steel.

My Tac-sol is from the first production run. The one with issues- -I had all kinds of jambing problems, some self inflicted. After about 200 to 300 rounds, reliability steadily improved, to where now it shoots like a sewing machine.

Things I learned:

1) Use plated bullets, or lead bullets with no lube. 22 uppers are dirty, bullet lube attracts dirt, dirty bullets = jambs. Federal Bulk Pack from Walmart cycles well- -accuracy, not so much. (or worked, my local store has been out for 4 months)

2) Tac-sol's chrome (edited) Stainless steel bolt- -lube very little. Everything I had read on 22 uppers said run with a "wet bolt". Found out that lube attracts powder residue, which = jambs. I run my Tac-Sol bolt essentially dry.

3) There is a "break-in" period, where everything gets polished up. Don't expect them to work 100% out of the box. Keep shooting, it will improve. Knowing how to quickly clear a jamb is a good thing!

4) Regular old GI trigger works great. Some match triggers don't work as well, or at all with 22 uppers.

5) Ammo again... some works some don't. Find what works. SK Standard Plus shoots into 1-1/2" at 100 yards off the bench...for 5 shots, then it jambs every other shot. (heavt bullet lube)

22 uppers are addictive, FUN and cheap to shoot!

Edited to add: I got my Tac-Sol LT upper at GunKings.com

The LT upper I have is very light - Its a thin stainless(?) barrel inside a 3/4" diameter aluminum sleeve. My 8 year old daughter can shoot it. The M4 Tac-Sol upper uses a Mike Rock barrel.

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

I have a Tac Sol 22 upper on order and it should be here soon. Thanks for the report. I will post a range report on the Tac Sol upper when I get mine also.

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

CMMG's chamber adapter is a little different. Wilson Combat came out with a dedicated upper which is from TACSOL but with a ff rail, front sight/gb, a magazine and their FH.

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

My Tac Sol upper showed up on Friday. I assembled it and it had some issues. Went out of town on the weekend, but Monday night I went thru it and figured it out. The trigger was the issue. I used a std notched Rock River trigger assembly in a DPMS reciever as I ran out of DPMS parts kits. It would shoot 1 round, load the next without cocking the hammer. I disasembled and installed a JP trigger as it was the only one I had. It would then only shoot a few rounds and have light strikes and not fire. The fix was to use a std hammer spring with the JP trigger.
Runs like a sewing machine. Very happy with the quality and service with Tac Sol.
I plan on replacing the JP trigger assembly with a DPMS std trigger.

Range report and follow up will be next.

Not sure if you can get these in the US but mine is a Viking Arms/CZ V22 upper on an SGC lower using SGC's own 25 round mag. Using CCI Mini-mag it runs like a dream:

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

this is my first post here, was looking for the newbie intro forum, but can not find it, if there is one, loooong time shooter, first time poster, this entire forum is THE BEST !!

i do not know about the Spikes unit.., but i can tell you the M4 TacSol upper i have will beat the new Colt M4 .22LR hands down.

took both to the range last week and fired about 200 round thru both, they both were very accurate at 50 yds. but the Colt needs more rounds to get it properly "broke in", had many FTFs and "stove pipes", the TacSol was flawless.., but then it has well over 2,000 rnds thru it, i installed a C-More tactical sight on it which can be used as iron sight or red dot.

i highly recommend the TacSol upper as it is no different than a standard M4 upper, NO plastic or polymer any where.., it THE best.., in my OPINION

Well Pete we may not agree on CS scopes but I will have to say I agree with 100% above!

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

I have the Spikes M4 dedicated upper and it works great. Now that I have several hundred rounds through it I rarely get a jam. Subsonic Remington and Federal bulk (both lead and copper washed) work great. All I have to do is wipe the chrome bolt off, and its clean.

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

My Tac Sol light upper has a couple thousand rounds through it. I have been using it for CQC drills. Once the hammer issue was worked out it never had and malfunctions at all.
Using Centurian ammo that seems very dry, very little lube, it has been flawless.
A very well constructed and thought out design. Also a note to their customer service was superb. Explained the hammer issue & how it worked.

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

I have a 16" dedicated Spike's upper and love it. It didn't like the Remington ammo I'd stocked up on, but loves the Federal bulk pack. My next one will be a 5.5" SBR. Should be fun!

Quote:

Using Centurian ammo

what did you pay for a brick of Centurion ammo ?
i paid $27.00 for one and believe that is about $10.00 too much.

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

Here is a link to where I bought it. $17.47 for 500 rounds

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/5000-rds-high-velocity-40-gr-22-lr-ammo.aspx?a=554425

On backorder now.
I paid a litle less $147.00 plus shipping Now it is 165.00 for 5,000 rounds. I have another 10,000 rounds on order as well.
It does not have a lot of lube but that is actualy good for ar 22 dedicated uppers as they will get dirty real quick.

Check around as there are other places to get it.

I will get some pics of my Tac Sol light later. I run a Eotech on it.

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

I've been running a Ceiner kit for a few years now as well. It runs smooth enough for my tastes. 'bout 1 jam in about 30 rounds.

can be partially attributed to real old ammo...

I've never accuracy tested it but at 25 yards, red dot optic, firing fast as possible its 1 hole. I also did some shooting out to 300 yards with it at a steel plate.

Personally I am very impressed with the conversion's accuracy in the .223 barrel. That being said, those TacSol's are nice!!!

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

I have a Tac Sol Upper w/ a 4.5 barrel and love it. It's still getting broke in but it runs better each time as stated before. I can confirm that the bolt likes to be dry.

I run mine dripping wet...

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

I came very close to buying a Tac Sol upper recently but held up when I heard about the new S&W M&P 15-22. Not sure which way I would rather go. Not planning to use it as a cheaper training aid as much as I just want to shoot it for fun. Need to handle one of the S&Ws in person to decide.

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

I have a Spikes dedicated on a little 9" upper. I run it dry. It took over 1000 rounds before I called it reliable, but it rarely jams on me now--I haven't tweaked it at all, either.

This is my post from another thread and I stand by it wholeheartedly . I could build a super trick 10-22 for the price of one of these or dman near a complete dedicated upper and have something that felt a bit more ..... real .

I went and handled one the other day and while it looked Uber-cool it reminded me of the toy M-16 I had as a kid . If these cost 250-275 my daughter would already have one but at the 470-500 price they are fetching in Boise they can keep them . Looks like I am gonna have to just build a dedicated .22LR upper and massage it until it works .

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

Have added a Spikes Upper for the AR and Advantage upper for the 1911 to the collection. Shooting more than ever with these two. No jams for malfunctions from either. Both eat the Federal bulk with no problems. Both are great for running drills, at minimal cost.

Re: Tactical Solutions AR upper

Kind reopening this thread, but i Just got back from a weekend camping trip, and my Spikes dedicated .22 first time out. I only put about 500 or so rounds through it this weekend, but with Federal bulk (Which has been stated above) I had no FTF or FTE. Ran nice and smooth, and has to be one of the most fun guns I've enjoyed shooting. Same weight, same feel to my Colt, a lot nicer on the wallet (500 rounds for $30) I know some guys have said the lack of recoil ruins the effectiveness of training with the .22, it still helps with manipulation drills and transitioning drills. (At least for me, I haven't had any "formal" training yet, so the magpul dvd's are the best I have for now. I plan to get to the range again this friday for another round with it. So far I am extremely satisfied with it, and would recommend it to anyone who may be looking to in this direction.

And a lil gun porn...

Is that a 4.5" AR upper or the pistol upper? I was told by a TS dealer they would not do sbr uppers. I wanted one.
