You can do the same thing with a woodburning tool and a steady hand. I don't know how much it costs but a tool is less than $10.00 at wally world. Might want to practice on something simlar before starting on your grips.
IPSC shooters have been doing it for 10-12 years.

I dont use a soldering iron for these, that is a way to do it though. That way is a pain in the ass and time consuming, and you can easily ruin a frame if you dont have any experience with this. But in no way is it rocket science either
