Taps

Here is Taps played in its entirety. The Original version of Taps was called Last Post, and was written by Daniel Butterfield in 1801. It was rather lengthy and formal, as you will hear in this clip, so in 1862 it was shortened to 24 notes and re-named Taps.

Picked this up over at the 6.8 forum. Thought it might be appreciated here.

Re: Taps

Yep, that was apreciated. Thanks for posting.

As Ive heard Tucker phrase it, "Got somthin in my eye".

They should have left it as it was.

Re: Taps

I had the privilege to be posted to duty in Arlington back in the 70's and only heard it played in it's entirety twice at full honors funerals. Both long and short versions still choke me up. To hear it echoing over the hills and stones of Arlington is a thing of devastating beauty.

Re: Taps

I heard a radio story a few weeks ago (Memorial Day weekend, in fact) about this guy who has organized 'real' buglers all around the country to play at veterans' funerals.

There is apparently a shortage of military buglers who can attend funerals and generally, a cassette tape and a boom box were being used.

This guy has spent $ tens of thousands of his own money to organize a network of buglers around the country who will volunteer for funerals.

After hearing the story, I sent a donation. I'll dig up the link to the story if I can find it. I think he said that 'his' volunteers have played at something like 20,000 (mostly WWII) veterans funerals in the past few years.

The guy who started this project deserves serious kudos!
