I'm not asking how long do I have to wait, so don't shoot yet.

This is the first suppressor I've bought, and so I'm wondering is there anything I can be doing, or should be doing, before it gets to my FFL? Or do I have to wait until the unit arrives to have serial number or something off of it first before I can do any of the paperwork or whatever it is I have to do?

Are there forms I can fill out and send in now?

Are there forms I can fill out and have ready to go if I'm not able to send them in now?

I keep reading stuff about form 3 and form 4 but I'm not quite sure which I'm supposed to do or both or what, or if I wait or if there is info I should have gathered before hand, passport id photo made, etc - etc...

I've got a while before it shows up I think, but if there is something I should or could be doing before it gets to my FFL, I'd be glad to get that stuff done and or ready to go.

If there is someone that knows the process that could could give me the "Buying a suppressor for Dummies" version that would be awesome and greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Edit:

I should note that I've checked this page out: http://www.silencershop.com/support/how-to-buy-a-silencer

It's all good info. But again, I'm wondering about any forms, if and when I can be filling out.

Thanks.

Re: Templar Tactical Firearms Group Buy

You cannot file a form 4 until the form 3 clears and your dealer has the suppressor in hand. The form 3 is to transfer the suppressor to your dealer. The form 4 is to transfer from dealer to individual or trust.

When your dealer gets the suppressor, he will fill out part of the form 4 (in duplicate) and give it to you. You will fill out the rest, add a check for $200, a form 5330.20, two blue FBI fingerprint cards.

While you are waiting on the form 3, you can download the form 5330.20 from the ATF site and fill it out. You should also decide if you want to go the route of a trust or just an individual transfer. If you chose a trust, you will need to find a lawyer that is familiar with nfa trusts and have him draw up a trust. If you are going the individual route, you need to make sure that your local law enforcement will sign off on the form 4. If they won't, then you are stuck with getting a trust. You can go ahead and get fingerprints and passport photos if you are going the individual route. My local sheriffs office does the fingerprints for free. I usually try to get at least 2 sets everytime I go so I don't have to keep going back for subsequent suppressors and sbrs.

I mail mine in a flat rate envelope with delivery confirmation so I know when it got there. I use a personal check so I can see when it clears.

Good luck. Enjoy the wait.

Oh yeah, you can also get your rifles threaded, pick out another suppressor and order it to get the wait on it started too.

That definitely helps, thank you!

I just hated the thought that I was sitting here doing nothing if there was something I could be doing at all.

I'm definitely going to look at the trust route. The cheapest I've seen so far is $500, but if a guy buys anything else in the future it sounds like it will streamline things.

The trust is a good option-- especially if you have family members or friends that you want to have access to your toys as well. My wife does not shoot, and my son is very young at this point, so I went with the individual route. The sheriff here is very friendly and more than willing to sign off. He is somewhat of a gun nut himself.

Another reason I have heard for getting a trust is to pass nfa items on to beneficiaries. I do not see this as a legitimate reason because they can be transferred tax free to any legal heir via the ATF form 5.

$500 is what the gun trust lawyer here charges (and it included all future changes). Some people use a computer generated trust without using a lawyer, but I wouldn't recommend it. Keep in mind the penalties for making a mistake when dealing with NFA items.
