This past Tuesday I received my custom turret from Vortex. It is calibrated in yards so when I range with my laser range finder all I have to do is turn the turret to the yardage and shoot.

It is mounted on my new Votrex Viper 6-24x50mm PST FFP MOA scope.

First I had to get it sighted in at 200 yds. which is my zero.

The elevation was approximately 800 feet, humidity about 60% and the temperature was 85 degrees. Wind was nil.

I then zeroed my turrets. the elevation was set at 2 for 200 yds. the windage was set at zero. When this was completed we moved back to the 400 yd position.

I set up to shoot and turned the elevation turret to 4 for 400 yds. which was calibrated from my drop chart by who ever does it for Vortex. With the windage turret left at zero this is the 3 shot group I got AT 400 YARDS with the scope set at 24 power. The rifle is a 6mm Norma BR. shooting Berger 105 gr. VLDs & Varget. The barrel is a 26" Brux 1 in 8" twist.

You look at the target. Is there anything more I need to say about the scope, custom turret or my rifle?

PS: I am really impressed with this scope. The optics were very clear and I never could see the "halo" on the outside of the lens, but it was a bright day. If you guys & gals can wait to get one you won't regret it. Next weekend God willing I will try to compare the optics with my buddies new Night Force.

Re: Tested my new Vortex custom turret.

That's impressive. The very small amount of drift right could easily have been due to a slight wind that you didn't notice. That's sub- .5 MOA so your rifle & load are fine tuned too!

My scope is a 1/4 MOA. on top of a EGW 20 MOA rail. The first revolution starts at #2 (200 yd. zero) then goes to 625 yds then on the second revolution goes to 900 yds. plus (?). The MIL scopes get more on the turrets. I would bet that they could make 3 revolutions and get way over 1000 yds. for both MOA & MIL.

And especially the Brux 1 in 8" twist barrel and the expertise of Kevin Rayhill of Stockade Gun stocks who built it for me.

Re: Tested my new Vortex custom turret.

Been waiting for the PST's. Makes the wait a little more worth it. Have you used that scope in lowlight much yet? If so, what did you think?

Not yet. I haven't even put the battery in the illuminated reticule yet either. Your wait for a PST will be very worth it in MHO. The clicks are very accurate and have been repeatable. AND boy do I love the custom turret which I expect to work at all ranges which I will confirm in the next couple of weeks.

I figure that my maximum kill range will be about 400 yds. so it should be fine for my Wyoming antelope & mule deer hunt this fall. If the opportunity presents its self I may take a long range head or neck shot. I have complete confidence in the rifle, but the situation has to be right.

Thanks for the review

This may be something of interest for the folks with standard turret based scopes, be it hunting or target shooting.

Re: Tested my new Vortex custom turret.

How are you going compensate for DA changes, on paper these turrets look like a good idea, but in real life IMHO there a waste of money, you could saved yourself some money and just learned how to dope dial and send.

A standard 6mm Br Norma using your bullet, drops below 1000 ft.lbs. at 460 yds. so your 400 questimate was a good one!!!

Not true Cobra. You just run the numbers for the differing DA and other factors. Then you dial to (lets say for example) 625 +2 clicks, etc. The beauty of the custom turrets (I use Kenton Industries)you don't count clicks until you get to your distance. I can spin my knob to 800 yards in a flash, look at my dope card for the conditions and make a minor adjustment and shoot. My buddies were still trying to get to the distance adjustment.

You can also get varying knobs for differing conditions for the same rifle.

to each his own.

Yes, however I hit the "all you can eat" buffets. Especially at lunch time. They have money and it's big game hunting in a target rich environment.

Re: Tested my new Vortex custom turret.

Listen Shank I'll do fat, I'll do ugly, but not fat and ugly, I shouldn't have to lower my standards to there's!

I don't count clicks, I simply figure out what the DA is at the place I'm shooting with my Kestrel 4000, then using my DA cards that Lindy taught us how to make, dial the scope and send it, if your only going to shoot in the sameplace that the temp and baro never change custom marked turrets are a great idea, but no where earth does that place exist

They do know heir shit. As a matter of fact I would not be surprised if they didn't make the Vortex knobs. They recently added the Vortex line. I just ordered a Viper 2-7x32 and it has standard target knobs with the protective caps. If you get the Kenton knobs the knobs they should be exposed like my Night Force scope.

I just have to chrono the semi-auto FAL at the right gas setting with FGM 168g. to get the right muzzle velocity before I order one.

Re: Tested my new Vortex custom turret.

Thanks Shank. I've got the Viper 6x20x44 and the guy at Kenton said my turret caps will go over his knob just like they do on the factory knob. As soon as I see which load my rifle gives the best 400 yard groups with I think I'm gonna give em a call and have one made.

Re: Tested my new Vortex custom turret.

OK here lies another problem in the making, you say you have to chrono your bullet speed then call kenton ind. and they make you caps going by your chrono and temp, baro, altitude and humidity etc. who is to say your chrono is exactly right? there are so many chrono's out there for less then a hundred bucks how do you know to trust them? do you take an average of 3 or 4 different chrono's? If you send them a wrong chrono speed that will just compound the error margin even more IMHO, vortex website has a ballistic clac that you use then go to the field using there numbers, shoot and see how far your off, then go back and send them the info and they will correct the FPS to a real time accurate speed, then still you have to remember all the other varibles and adjust for them WOW how confusing, I will just count moa's seems like the same dialing to moa marks as dialing to yardage marks just my thoughts, oh by the way I do have a kenton cap and it sits in my reloading room on a shelf cause I can never get all the varibles just right for it to be spot on
