Thinkin of my next build, looking at the 260 remington. I have two scenerios as I'm not looking at BR for now:
Varmint (most economical)
Receiver: Rem 700
Barrel: 26-28" Bartlien Match Chambered Varmint taper (Compensated?)
Stock: HS Precision PSS
Standard Rem bottom Metal
TPS base
Tuned factory trigger

Tactical (fill blown)
Receiver: R&D Guardian Build
Barrel: 26" Bartlien Match Chambered MTU
Stock: McMillan A5
Badger mag bottom metal (AW mags)
Badger or USO base
Tactical R&D Knob
basic trigger

Shooting will be down mostly up to 600yrd steel targets, paper out to 300 yards. Will fill the gap between my 6mm-223 and 308, possibly surpassing the 308 in distance. Possibly using it for dogs (prairie or yotes) in the 500-600 yard range.
What is the best barrel lenght as I have not decided? The Varmint is less than half the cost of the tactical. My 308 is a tactical(with varmint barrel) and my 6mm-223 is a varmint.

Cost is a factor, but want is also a factor to some degree. I might get both but that is a very small percentage. I might be thinking out loud but any advice is helpful. Still developing my 308 and 6mm-223 so I have time on my side, plus Randy is pretty booked

Re: The Ideal 260 Remington: Varmint or Tactical

Based on the criteria you laid out, I'd probably go with the varmint and save a little cash. The R&D is great, but I'd get it only if I wanted a rifle that will be abused and shot past 600 yards. For the distances you noted, the 26" barrel should be sufficient. Not really necessary to go longer.

If cost isn't a factor though, no question about it. I'd let Randy build me one of his new guardian rifles.

I am very impressed with the 260 rem gas guns. We have one built on a IRA receiver and it shoots very well. It is the ultimate "tactical" 260 IMHO.

Or just have the mag plates removed, then you can load out to 2.950"

Re: The Ideal 260 Remington: Varmint or Tactical

IMHO: I'd keep $$$ focused on the core, barreled action. Could always upgrade stock & bottom metal later on. Barrel contour(s) below seems to be somewhere close to MTU muzzle dia., but a little less in weight. A in between from the Varmint and MTU.

Not sure how fast your going to push the MV on your .260Rem? But, the No.8 has a longer "B" Section, 5", if you plan to have it setback in the future.

A medium between the two paths above:

- Receiver: R&D Precision Guardian Action

- Barrel: Bartlien SS 26"
* #14 M24/M40 Rem. Tact 1.200 3.000 .900 26" @ 6.20#
* #8 Light Varmint 1.200 5.000 .875 28" @ 7.00#

- Lug: Holland SS "pinned" or Seekins Lug/Base Combo?
- Stock: HS Precision PSS or B&C Light Tactical Stock #2956-02
- Bottom Metal: Standard Rem bottom Metal
- Scope Base: TPS 20moa Steel Scope Base
- Trigger: Tuned factory trigger

Have a great one,
FTK

Or feed it from the AW mag at 2.950 without having to remove any plate and you get a double stack 10 round mag.

Re: The Ideal 260 Remington: Varmint or Tactical

Or go with a 6.5 creedmoor and have a better chambering. better cheaper quality brass, Hornady Loaded factory ammo, Inexpensive Hornady die set. Short action, Whats not to like there. I wouldnt even consider the 260rem now that the creedmoor is available. I know a good smith that has a new reamer too.. Lee
