The New Math: 2+2≠5, Or, Perpetuating White Privilege Via The Pythagorean Theorem

Darwin must be on vacation .How does such a disproportionately large amount of stupid exist in our world . Man be needs to step it the fuck up or at least hire some temps to help with the work load .

Wasn't Algebra and the concept of zero a non blond haired blue eyed thing?

Our education system is a shambles.

My daughter was telling me the other day her class read a book about a man that was born without legs and he was able to compete in the Olympics. This the week Harvey Weinstein is being outed and they want Oscar Pistorius to be a hero in my daughters eyes.

"Professor" Rochelle Gutierrez, It is my great pleasure to introduce you to one Mr. John Urschel;

By the way, I'm color blind. In spite of that, you really need to change the color of your lipstick. You're moderately attractive, but you'd be much more so with better make up and without that childish, nonsensical chip on your shoulder.

Interesting theory. Of course, Pythagoras (and there is some debate as to whether this person ever existed) would not have identified as "white," being Mediterranean...

My high schoo of 2000 had about 20 individuals that were minorities. I'd wager not many of the white kids could use the quadratic equation or could solve for x in 1/0=x.

Meaning white doesn't make privileged. Having parents that give a damn does.

"School mathematics curricula emphasizing terms like Pythagorean Theorem and pi perpetuate a perception that mathematics was largely developed by Greeks and other Europeans," she says.

when we all know it was developed by Mexicans and Africans..............

I hate to break it to you, Clem, but the Mayans were using it as a placeholder 250 years before JC, and it was the Hindus in India who first seemed to use it in a calculatory fashion around 650 AD. The Moors took it westward with them and dragged it into Europe via Spain c. 711 AD.

So, hate all you want, but the fact is that it wasn't just Europeans who made all the great early advances in mathematics.

Europe reached a peak than went into a period of collective regression during the Dark Ages (no racism intended).

Most other cultures were advancing or rediscovering while Europe lived a Monty Python scripted existence.

Plenty of things done by ancient non European cultures we cant figure out how they did it or replicate today.

She doesn't suffer due to "white privlidge" she suffers from a poor education - likely publicly financed and possibly occurring during the age when everyone gets a trophy.
