The Patriot is the last adult movie I saw in a theater. I just stopped sending money to Hollywood as much as I could. From time to time I take my kids to a kids movie.
...i think you saw a different version of the Patriot than the rest of us...

It's loosely based on the "Swamp Fox" IIRC. It was out when I joined the army. For some reason it just doesn't sit with me the same. I really liked the dragooneer though, he made a good asshole.
That is the way it very often is in real life revolutions and insurgencies.
Which is why if you are the ones running the revolution or insurgency, if you can get your enemies to respond to your attacks by doing things that harass, harm, despoil or kill uninvolved / innocent local citizens, it will usually work to your advantage to help make sure you have lots of local support and increase the numbers of your fighters. Usually relatives / friends of those killed by your enemies can often be recruited to become dedicated fighters or at least loyal supporters.
Meanwhile as often happens your enemies think wrongly that the local populace will turn on their local freedom fighters to stop the foreign invaders from harming them.
Very old story. If we were to write a book chronicling each instance throughout history, I'm not sure the chapters could be numbered. The same still happens, even here in the good 'ol US of A. As I type, there is a drug dealer or a gang member threatening family members and neighborhoods. And I'm sure a politician is threatening someone's family with "legal" action to further their agenda. Smaller scale, but just as terroristic.

No shit, my 6th grade history teacher came to class dressed like a union soldier, decked the room out in period-ish stuff, and even had some old muskets to show and tell about. Then we watched The Patriot, and I felt some DNA-level hatred I'd never experienced before.
Well no good can come of Godless harlots.
You turn your back on your faith, family and beliefs to hang out with some slutty whore of satan and things tend to go down hill fast.
Fortunately it seems he found the road back to sanity and clawed his way back out of the pit.

Not in the least. i'm simply stating, without going over established lines, something that might reflect another reality not fitting into convenient, eight-color crayon friendly coloring books.
It's much more nuanced than just good/bad, right/wrong, etc., etc. We're supposed to shy away from such discussions here.

I live in Charleston (Charles Towne) and I am still trying to find that damn hill they were on when they came down to Charleston.......lol Damn that must have been a huge undertaking to flatten the land from here to Columbia.
