I just finished doing a full range ladder test on the entire range of powder charges recommended for my 300WM with H-1000 in conjunction with the 208 gr. A-Max.

What perplexed me to do this was the lack of information specific to the 208 A-Max and H1000.

My manuals dont list 210 gr. bullets for the 300WM, so I cut the difference between 200 and 220 gr. which left me at 79 gr. Max charge for the load. I worked up to 79.8 gr if pressure signs didnt show themselves, but wasnt set on shooting these, as they were put in another ammo box by themselves.

The approach:

Rounds were loaded from 75 to 79.8 gr. in .2 gr. increments, 2 rounds per charge weight...charge was thrown via Chargemaster and confermed via MyWeigh Gem-Pro 250 w/ .02 gr. accuracy.

Each target shot would represent an entire grains variation...10 shots per target, with velocity recorded and pressure signs observed.

All rounds were shot at 220 yards in the prone.

Easy to see that Targets 2 and 5 show the most promise, Target 5 more so IMO, but being as hot as it is I may revert back to target 2. Im estimating between 3000 and 3150 FPS on Target 5??? Comments and guestamates are welcome.

Next weekend, the 6th and 7th, I'll have time to focus more precise work ups on the 79 gr. range and the 79 gr. range, hopefully with some velocities for the 79 gr. range.

This is one of my first range reports with the hide....So forgive any crudeness.

Thanks, W.W.

I would try a different powder if you are not comfortable with the high charge
weights of H1000 that shot well. Speeding up the powder to something like H4831 may give you the same shock wave speed with a lower charge. m2c

Re: The Ultimate Ladder Test. 300WM - H1000/208 A-Max

Its a Win. Mag.

Would I be wasting time with the idea that I could establish a prefered velocity with H1000, then deplicate the velocity with other powders to see what powders perform best?

Re: The Ultimate Ladder Test. 300WM - H1000/208 A-Max

No that is not a waste of time. Different calipers have known nodes. Maybe someone with more 300WM experiance can share some. It's not uncommon to see groups work that way as you go in, through, and out of nodes.

Re: The Ultimate Ladder Test. 300WM - H1000/208 A-Max

Good start, once you have some sort of base line increase the shots to 3 to 5 per group. I am also setting up some loads with the 190 serria mkbt (80.5 gr) and the 208 gr Amax with h1000. I don't have the 208's loaded as high as yours are.
Keep posting your results and I'll share mine also.
Thanks for your service.

Re: The Ultimate Ladder Test. 300WM - H1000/208 A-Max

It would be nice to get some data flowing on the A-Max....
Not as much of it around as I initialy thought.

Re: The Ultimate Ladder Test. 300WM - H1000/208 A-Max

The load-velocity data was usefull information..

What was the Cartridge overall length ? What was the outside temperature ?

i dont think the grouping means anything to me.. Your shooting from prone instead of a good solid rest.. and only shooting 2 shots per charge weight.. so we are seeing your shooting error, or luck.. so the grouping is meaningless to me..

also.. reguarding ladder tests.. if i buy a 300 Win Mag.. i am buying it for a certain level of performance.. if i have to download it to say 30-06 levels to get shightly smaller group sizes.. i dont see not point in buying the magnum, with its greater costs and recoil.

Bench grouping and field accuracy are to differnet things..

The powder change will change the harmonics. The best accuracy
will most likely come at a different speed.

Re: The Ultimate Ladder Test. 300WM - H1000/208 A-

Waldo,
My guess is that you are using compressed loads in the 79.0 + range with the 208 Amax. What are you using at OAL? I'm using 90.2 mm OAL in my 700P, If you can post a picture of your cases @ 79.0 + gr's. I'd like to see your primers. What primers and brass are you using?

Re: The Ultimate Ladder Test. 300WM - H1000/208 A-

Primers are CCI 250 LRM's showing no cratering, or flattening in the 79 gr. range.

Cases are Winchester....4th firing now.

79.6 gr. gets me 100% density with 79.8 being compressed. Without a drop tube.

i dont have my dummy round in my room...Ill take a measurment later. but its kissing the lands.

Ill see if anyone around here has a digi-cam, my cell phone would never pick up any primer details.

Re: The Ultimate Ladder Test. 300WM - H1000/208 A-

I'm also using cci 250's but Rem New Brass. I don't know the volume difference between Win & Rem Brass. My max OAL to be touching my lands is 3.638" or about 90.4 mm. Would have been interesting to see what speeds you were at from 79.0 to 79.8.

Re: The Ultimate Ladder Test. 300WM - H1000/208 A-

I would have thought for sure you would exhibit some form of preassure signs touching the lands with the high loads. H1000 looks very promising and @ 200yds the 208 Amax is starting to settle down.

Re: The Ultimate Ladder Test. 300WM - H1000/208 A-

No range session this week-end dur to poor weather, and an attractive little female down the road.

Field Op. from 06/08 to 06/18 so data will fallow that.

Re: The Ultimate Ladder Test. 300WM - H1000/208 A-Max

I have run 2 different loads in 2 brls with my 300WM & both shot thier best @ about 2950 fps. Old brl was a 1-10"tw X 26" with 78.6gr, & this new one is a 28" with a match chamber, so I'm @ 75.5gr, but both chrony @ 2950, & shoot .3 moa.

Re: The Ultimate Ladder Test. 300WM - H1000/208 A-Max

H1000 shot the 208 Amax like shit out of my 300winmag kreiger barrel. I switched to H4831sc and havent looked back. 71.5g gets me 2805fps with an ES of 5
