A gentleman I work with grew up in Pender. Knows the family well. Sounds like he is doing OK. Lives at the farmhouse by himself, but is managing.

A man with such energy, willpower and determination to make things right for himself and his family deserves all of the respect and recognition the world has to offer. Mr. Kaser sounds like somebody who absolutely will not tolerate intimidation or nonsense from anybody.

Somehow, even before reading the article proper, I pictured him to be like Texas Ranger Captain Woodrow F. Call in Streets Of Laredo, especially right after Joey Garza had blasted him in the leg.

Having grown up in a small farm community, I am not the least bit surprised.

Tough and hard working folk. Most city folk would collapse 1/3 through an average farmer’s day. Let alone a busy one.

The year before Ralston did that, he climbed Denali. He flew up to the glacier from Talkeetna with my company.
Got to hang with their group a bit after their return (they were pretty cool, bought me a nice dinner and drinks as a tip for the work I did packing their gear) and he was the standout as the nicest and most fun. When I saw his picture in the paper in May 2003 I was excited for what he had done cool now. The print was below the fold.......

No shit, right? I spent a couple years on a large ranch in NE when I was a teenager. I guess it was hard work. It would be now, then it was actually something to do. It gets boring as fuck out there (this was before the net and cable didn't go that far). Sunrise you feed the cattle, sunset you make the final drive to inspect the cattle. Everyday. inbetween sunrise and sunset, there's a million and a half things to do and fires to put out (sometimes literal fires) --it's never a boring day. And bailing wire. And duct tape. If you know what I'm talking about, you get it, because it's the only thing holding shit together and making it work. Don't forget the arc welder. You wear ten different hats on any given day.

I never fell in the auger, but it sure as shit crossed my mind. That'd be horrible, damn, and if he couldn't reach the shut off, that motherfucker will keep torquing his leg until he does cut it free. He probably didn't have much time or choice really, a tourniquet and quick cut because he'll be going through a major artery in this case, the femoral. The kid stuck in the chasm had to go through the brachial artery but that one's not nearly as dangerous to cut as the femoral for a few reasons.

Damn sure was lucky, because after that, he also needed an ambulance fast.

As for me, I have no illusions --I'd cut myself free if I couldn't rip it free first. I'm no stranger to severe pain and have gone in shock due to pain alone. Besides, the endorphins would probably be worth it. And with my feet, it's not like I'd really be losing much.
