I had the good fortune today to shoot with a fine young man and help him get his AR zeroed.

Back story:
For the past 30 or so years I have been going to a dentist that still treats his patients a individuals and really cares that they receive the best care. The majority of that time has been spent in the chair of a dental hygienist. The last 10-15 years I’ve had the same hygienist, twice a year.

Well, long story short-ish, she mentioned that her 18 yo son, raised by her as a single mom, had put together an AR and needed someone to help him zero it. She is not familiar with guns but supports him in his endeavors. I offered to help him as I am often at the range on weekends and like to support young people in their shooting interests.

In any case, I met him at the range this morning. A straight and tall young man with a firm handshake, looked me in the eye when he talked and called me sir (totally without warrant). I showed him how to bore sight the 1-6x scope and with just a couple adjustments, he was zeroed. It was so far off that he was impacting over 2 feet low at 100 yards. So understandable that he was having trouble zeroing.

He knew his weapon pretty well and had used high quality components. He knew his safety and applied it. It was, all in all, a good morning at the range.

After he left, he texted me to thank me for the help.

Oh, and talking with him, he’s headed into a pre-med program at college and will enter ROTC in his Junior year. In all, he had his head screwed on right and I was happy to see that there are still parents that are raising their sons and daughters up right. It gave me hope.

Nice write up. And good for you for helping him out. There are plenty of people who don't realize how one seemingly small act of kindness (like OP provided) can really turn many people around. The young man OP helped out, may now tell other people how a gun guy helped him out, and thereby get some other people to re-consider whether gun people are as bad as they had been hearing.

There are still some! Because of good people such as yourself helping a willing youngster!
Well thanks, but I cannot take any credit for this young man’s character. That credit belongs to a single mother who works hard for a living and took the time and consideration to make sure she did right by her son. In other words, she was a proper parent and didn’t abdicate her responsibility to the schools or other institutions. She didn’t take handouts or use excuses for not doing it right. That is what really matters, especially now with all of the institutional indoctrination that pushes a victim mentality and mediocrity as normal.

Two kids shooting yesterday, an AR and an R700 with Nightforce.

Saw the boxes of FGMM 175 on the bench and overheard their bewilderment regarding "I think your high" while looking at an unmarked 12" diameter target.

Killed me thinking a buck a round was turning dirt uselessly.

So I asked them to go cold, we took my roll of butcher paper down range to create a clean backer board and the next dollar shot was 9 oclock at 15-16 inches left.

Rest was easy from there.

Make friends of the frustrated.

Glad I was zeroing a new rifle and had the paper on hand....
