I had the good fortune today to shoot with a fine young man and help him get his AR zeroed.
Back story:
For the past 30 or so years I have been going to a dentist that still treats his patients a individuals and really cares that they receive the best care. The majority of that time has been spent in the chair of a dental hygienist. The last 10-15 years I’ve had the same hygienist, twice a year.
Well, long story short-ish, she mentioned that her 18 yo son, raised by her as a single mom, had put together an AR and needed someone to help him zero it. She is not familiar with guns but supports him in his endeavors. I offered to help him as I am often at the range on weekends and like to support young people in their shooting interests.
In any case, I met him at the range this morning. A straight and tall young man with a firm handshake, looked me in the eye when he talked and called me sir (totally without warrant). I showed him how to bore sight the 1-6x scope and with just a couple adjustments, he was zeroed. It was so far off that he was impacting over 2 feet low at 100 yards. So understandable that he was having trouble zeroing.
He knew his weapon pretty well and had used high quality components. He knew his safety and applied it. It was, all in all, a good morning at the range.
After he left, he texted me to thank me for the help.
Oh, and talking with him, he’s headed into a pre-med program at college and will enter ROTC in his Junior year. In all, he had his head screwed on right and I was happy to see that there are still parents that are raising their sons and daughters up right. It gave me hope.
