Holy fuck me to tears Batman !

This shit has to quit, and now.

So I get up this AM head to the computer to finish editing the Desert Tech video I have been shooting, and my Mac Pro starts turning off in the middle of it. Not only that my USB Bus appears to be toast, as my keyboard stopped working when plugged the port on the computer. If I use Thunderbolt to a USB Dock it will work, but fuck me.

Not only that I have to unplug any external drives to turn it on, then plug them in. I just edited a video from the same footage the day before, no issues, other than the restart has been hit or miss for as few weeks, but the computer ran fine. Now, not so much

Think my Trash Can is going and going fast

All of the Mac pros I bought the kids for College ect all went tits up without a hint.
I thought they were just abusing them but after more than 3 I saw a pattern.

    6 years on this one,

Just died, I am 99% finished with the video and the only version I have rendered has one title that was not finished, otherwise it is complete

My laptop and desktop are not exactly paired the same for video so trying to do it on the laptop is basically a start over principle. I get too many missing elements because of plugins and titles.

It goes to 98% of rendering and restarts the computer if it doesn't freeze completely, even the one render that did work takes like 30 plus minutes to finish, if it does at all.

Going on at least 8 attempts to get this finished right, the entire office is nothing but parts and wires now from pulling off accessories and external drives hoping to get it to work.

Its' treated me well for 6 years but fuck me it's bad timing, told DTA I would be finished today

Costco has iMacs at a pretty good price. Woulda thought you’d get more than 6 years, but what the hell. I have a personal MacBook Pro that you couldn’t pry from my cold, dead fingers. As soon as I retire, I’m done with Windows.
Bite the bullet and just get a new iMac.......done.

6 years old I might guess Chinese capacitors are finally drying out.
Sucks to have them go down when you really need them.
Especially since Apple stuff isn't as cheap as the PC stuff to replace.

Gonna make a trip to the genius bar to see if they can salvage it

If not, I am just gonna have to do a better job of matching stuff so I can work seamlessly between the different computers.

bitch is, if all the same stuff is not installed and I use a bunch of 3rd party plugins, the video cannot be edited correctly across computers even though I can access the files and the FCPX Libraries, it just gives you a bunch of red frames

If you don't pay attention to me (who the hell would really) I am a mechanic by trade. I understand shit breaking for no apparent reason.
But laptops, PC's, and phones are in another realm.
My father who in his late 30's went from construction to network manager for a major defense contractor just laughs at me when I bitch about computers.
Personally me and electronics outside the automotive world have a love-hate relationship.
@Lowlight what you are going through I don't think I would wish on my worst enemy.
    Ugh!!!!!

I have a 9 year old PC that is still making videos ring a ding ding. Rust Spindle drives and dog shit RAM.

Why are you using Mac's to do a mans job?

No offense - iMac is crap. Get a newish PC with appropriate software and give up the Mac stuff. There will be a learning curve but you'll be glad you did.

    VooDoo

PS: there is a reason you see computers and other electronics shot to a million pieces!!!
The issue is they dont clean that shit up.

The first thing I would try is to pull the cover, remove the RAM and reseat it.
I have a similarly aged Mac Pro as well, but haven't had any random issues like you have described.

Interesting. All I run is Mac stuff and I have a G5 that is like 15 years old and still going strong!

    FUCK WINDOZE

I can not suffer a Windows-based computer, they are unusable, I have a surface pro because I need to access some PC stuff, but it sucks ass

This mac (NOT AN iMac, it's a Mac Pro) has been flawless for 6 years, I am sure the heat upstairs go it a bit, the top floor of the house gets pretty hot and Macs tend to run hot. I moved it when I notice the heat, and did a better job of keeping it cool, but nope

I did get the video rendered, it worked this last one, but when I was just playing it back, simple quicktime video it frozen and died. I got the file off the trash can and uploaded so I am good for now

    Tomorrow Genius bar trip

    What is crazy too

I have a Sirius XM radio on my desk and today it stopped working too, no signal error messge

I thought the squirrels ate the antenna wire again, but I could not find the issue. So not only do I have to fix the computer I have to figure out what is wrong with this as the account is still good and I tried the signal refresh, but nope, no worky

I use a cooling base/pad. It seems to help with the freakin’ heat these things generate these days.

Why, when I was a kid...well, when I was a kid they didn’t even have personal computers, so never mind.

Have you heard from shaggyback or captain kickass?

    Power surge?

Damn, that sucks Frank! Here would be my "Internet Diag" take on what's wrong if it's just hard-shutdown with no automatic reboot.

    A) Defective USB device that's plugged in OR too much power draw on a single bus port.

    B) Overheating video card/CPU (dusty perhaps)? Even a video card or CPU could cause this if it has "heat creeped" out of it's slot/socket over time.

    C) Defective internal power supply.

    D) Defective main board (no home fix for that of course).

I heard they kick like a mule?
    What bipod are you using?

That's an Atlas 5-H. Had the same setup myself (375CT), but sold it. It was an absolute laser, but I couldn't deal with the ergonomics (or the magazine - ughh). I'm just not a bullpup guy I guess.

Part of me still wishes I had kept it.

Thanks. I have a srs covert that I love but when I went the 50 route I took a different path because everyone said it kicks so bad.

Never shot mine in 50 BMG, but the 375CT was pretty tame. Fat Bastard Gen II brake worked very well. 50 BMG is going to push you around a good bit unless it's a 30+ lb. rig.

My favorite owned 50 BMG rifle of all time was the EDM Windrunner M96. Second, McMillan TAC-50.

Now, just need to find a way to procure a DSR-50 (or even a DSR-1). WANT IT NOW!

A 50 cal is just a 50 cal. Even the big Barrett M 82 semi auto would punish you.

I've got a serbu semi auto and it weighs a lot less than a Barrett and doesn't kick too bad. The concussion kicks my ass more than anything.

You'll laugh your ass off but I swear its true. When I first went back to school and needed to learn computers Id go into the lab for class and a whole row of them would shut down when I sat at one. It was spooky and happened several times/ Teacher finally made me leave cause it was so interrupting the whole class. I had to get a private tutor. True story.

    Agreed! I hate Windows!!

    Ugh!!!!!

I'm 100% certain as a mechanic you absolutely understand. You know when that customer brings you the house brand poorly made shit parts (probably made in China), and you think fuck me this thing will be right back in my shop.

100% of that mac and nearly every other computer was made in the factory next door by the guys that didn't give a shit about the quality of the automotive part either.

Lowlight did pretty damn well to get 6 years out of a computer. It's like getting 300,000 miles out of an automatic transmission. You probably should not be surprised when it goes out.

This is no gray cloud @Lowlight , one too many rounds down the barrel so to speak on that mac book. It always happens at the worst time but do yourself a favor and don't take the 3000 round count barrel to your next match, even it it shot fine the other day. In other words replace your computer at 4 years or after 2-3 if it's a PC if you make your living from it.

I honestly think apple slips a mickey into there downloads in the older models and renders them useless so you buy another one. I am going threw the same nightmare right now with my Mac Pro its freezing up constantly and and tells me it cant get a connection to server. My prior Mac book pro seemed to suffer the same fate, kind of seems like a strange and consistent pattern to me. Pisses me off because I don't have the 3 g to throw down on a new one.

You can get yourself a good 6 to 10 year lifespan out of a PC if you have it done up with high end long life parts.
You may have to change out a power supply, a fan or a storage device somewhere along the way.
The biggest thing however is if you are running windows, most likely every couple years Windows will eat itself & you'll have to format and reinstall from scratch.

Sure it can happen, and that is fine for surfing porn, playing video games or whatever at home, not if you are a professional. Just like a rifle barrel, replace it before it fails if your livelihood depends on it (money or flesh).

I would classify Frank as a media professional, between the Hide, Podcast and all of the content he produces he has to spend a shit ton of time behind his computer. I imagine that is directly tied to a good portion of his income. Why would you fuck with a 6 year old computer?

A computer is expendable like a barrel.

You got too high a round count on a six year old computer for the high power demands you need.

After your constant pounding surprised it turns on at all.

Pull all relevant files and upgrade asap.

Edit A six year old computer in your endeavors is good for only one thing.

    A 1000 yard target.

Six years is like ? 20 dog years.
