So for the past year my left arm has been pretty useless. It started as my arm just/shoulder losing range of movement and becoming weak after any kind of exertion with it.
slowly it progressed to less range of motion and almost zero strength in my hand (working a diesel mechanic my hands were not weak by any means) then my arm started tingling and my ring finger and pinky started going numb.

After about 8 months my left arm was useless almost a burden. I couldn’t use it for anything and the muscle I had started to almost decay I guess you could put it. The bones in my hand became pronounced as the muscle disappeared. I had zero strength in my hand shoulder or arm. Couldn’t open a jar because I had no grip couldn’t Pick up my dog because I had zero strength in my arm or shoulder

For years my doctors guessed and settled on herniated discs in my neck when ever I had a episode where my neck seized up and shoulder tensed up requiring a dose pack of prednisone to get me back moving again.

eventually they gave emg nerve conduction tests which came back inconclusive so after some lengthy arguments I got into see a orthopedic doctor. Luckiest doctors visit of my life. He had diagnosed thoracic outlet syndrome once before in his career. Apparently it is a rare disorder. He sent me off to see a doctor who only specializes in this disorder who sent me for a specialized ct scan developed specifically for this disorder. Directly after the ct scan I was injected with Botox. Two shot in my neck and one deep in my chest and the next day I started getting some movement back no more numbness.
Now I’m a week in and my I have full range of motion almost and no more tingling or numbness. What seem like a super small feat but was great for me I could open a jar again and pick up and Pick up my dog again.

no one can give me a reason why it happened only speculation of it’s from the wear and tear my body went through while I was serving in the Marines.

the best I can explain it is the soft tissue between my first rib and clavicle was some how damaged and developed scare tissue. This scare tissue created compression on the nerves and veins that pass between the first rib and clavicle causing this whole problem.

So far the Botox has been working for me 60% success rate from what the doc told me. If it stops working next step is removing my first rib to make room for the nerves and blood vessels. I am not really interested in removing a rib personally.

if you read this and feel like you have the same issue and no doctor has been able to figure it out you may want to see a orthopedic doctor and ask about thoracic outlet syndrome. It’s a rare disorder from what they have been telling that often never gets diagnosed because so little is know about it.

^^^^^^^....................make the woman of your dreams.

Seriously, glad it worked out for you.:)

Had a similar thing happen to me when I was 30, picked up a TV, turned to put it down........30 minutes later my arm went numb.

X-rays showed nothing, next day my arm was fine, pinched something, kinda scary actually.

definitely feel your pain man glad you recovered quickly. 100% scary when you lose the use of an appendage for any amount of time. Good thing we can shoot from the prone with one arm lol

    Ok here goes,

Yes I also have been diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) right side & have had the top rib removed on that side.(have it in the freezer)
It helped a bit but not a cure for me.
Also a mechanic by for 30 odd years, plus a life lived( raced dirt bikes as a kid+ raced cars etc etc)
Still have the numbness, pins & needles + pain.

I work hard to keep range of motion & keep muscle tone but its painful.
On a couple of nerve pain blocking meds as well.

Also have other issues that the Doctors are debating on what needs to be done to help.
Previous accident (BMX dirt jumps) in which the right clavicle was broken into 3 pieces & it healed with a sharp piece of bone jammed into the nerves & the right shoulder inwards nearly an inch from where it should be, possibly also causing TOS .
I would like the docs to rebreak it & set it at the proper length as it should hopefully help.(specialist has agreed with me on this)

Foraminal stenosis in my neck pinching nerves etc, limited feeling & Pain on my right side mainly right arm, hand & under arm but down my right leg also which causes a limp on bad days which is unfortunately more often than not.

Had spinal nerve root injections in my neck a few weeks ago, not fun but it did change the sensation & got some feeling back in my underarm & the leg was great for about a week,
they tell me that is a good sign.

Maybe need disc replacements or fusion, still waiting to get an appointment to see the spinal surgeon.
Some doctors have said brachial plexus issue as well.
And some damage in the right scapula area too.

Sorry to hear man. I know tos sucks but the other stuff added must magnify everything.
did they try the Botox injections on you at all?
where I am there is doctor that specialized in tos and that all he treats so I feel like I lucked out a bit there.

any noticeable complications from the rib removal? I haven’t been able to talk to anyone who has had it.

hope everything get resolved for you soon and you get to a pain free life

    All good,
certainly have good & bad days.
Haven't been able to work for the last 2 years which is very frustrating.

Have had Cortisone injections with some success . haven't had Botox injections yet but will bring it up with the Doc.

    The Rib removal went well,
I went back to work too soon & overloaded the right arm/shoulder which hurt like hell & I think did some damage.
So complications were self inflicted by me being stubborn & not wanting to lose the job which I had to leave anyway.

Hopefully if you need the rib removal it goes well, take it easy after to let it heal up properly before you fully load it.

Thanks for the well wishes, they are greatly appreciated.

Some notes on shooting how I am now,

I haven't tried shooting prone for a long time but might have to try left handed if I can't do it with the right.

I struggle to feel triggers under 2 pound properly,
.308 off a bench is too much without a brake.
6.5cm is just ok, but I am going to try a brake on it too.
still hunt a bit with a 12g but pay for it for the next few weeks after.

Only thing I can shoot more than a handful of rounds without extra pain is .223 & rimfire so that's what I shoot with most.
The Howa .223 is in a recoil reducing axiom stock.
I know the stock isn't great but its easy on the shoulder & it still shoots under 1moa, should try it in chassis.
Have MDT, LSS-XL & gen 2 LSS-XL in the safe.
The MDT crew came half way round the world to my local shop & were great, I cannot speak highly enough of them.

Have a Howa .22 on order, saving up for a Vudoo & will start saving for a Hoplite rifle after that.

Trying to keep a positive attitude helps.

I would definitely try to get the Botox injections even if it only works on 60% of people it’s worth a try. It has been a massive relief for me. My hand only goes numb in certain positions now. Also all the twitching my shoulder was doing from muscle spasm completely stopped. If your doc has questions on the procedure tell them to reach out to Dr.Donahue at mass general. I assume he would let them know how it done. I had to have a specialized cat scan so they could see how my Antony is before they did the injections. The injections took maybe 20 mins to do all said and done the only one that was slightly bothersome was the one that went deep into the pec area.

as for muzzle breaks I highly recommend the area 419 hellfire. It makes my 260 rem shoot nice and soft.

I think I have something close that noone can figure out and I just stopped having them look at it.

I get some kind of entrapment on my left arm from what feels like my upper neck/shoulder area. Makes my left arm go slightly numb at times as well as causes/aggrevates the ulner nerve in the same arm.

When I started getting it more often I thought it was a fucking heart attack sign. The good news is I don't think it makes my arm/hand go as numb as you're experiencing and is more annoying then anything.

No idea what caused it specifically, but then again I didn't find out I broke part of my jaw until I had x rays done at a new dentist and they asked how long ago it was since I broke my jaw because they could see mandibular tori in my gums/jaw line.

Went to the doctor, x rays, scans, contrast, etc. I was certain I had compressed lumbar or something (which would make perfect sense given my background) and everyone just shook their head and told me to 'not use my arm as much' (LOL what?) or some shit as well as a ibuprofen consolation prize.

Thanks Wulf, I'll see if I can get the Botox injections here.
Curious to see where the the one in the chest goes through to.

Have had the 2 cortisone injections through the neck, CT guided into spinal nerve roots. It helped.
Would be great to have less numbness in the hand.

I'll order a brake after Christmas for the 6.5

Did this start out as minor numbness at first in a hand or maybe a feeling like carpel tunnel but not, and a feeling like a pinched nerve that comes and goes?

It took multiple MRI's over years before they found the my nerve issue's.
Also gave up having them look a few times.

I'm no doctor but look up Foraminal stenosis, it might just be an age & mileage thing

Funny you mention about not knowing when you did it & your jaw,
Also had a Dentist ask when I broke my jaw.

When I had the first MRI 6 months after breaking the clavicle the radiologist asked why I didn't complain about my neck & back as it looked like I had 2 fractures in the neck & 1 in the back at the same time as the clavicle.

At the time I got my brother in-law to drive me to the hospital, walked into the emergency dept & told them I had a broken clavicle & my neck & back hurt, The response was a smartarse "how do you know the clavicle is broken" from the nurse so I just pulled my shirt across & showed her which she replied with OHH, please take a seat & I'll get a Doctor.

Man it pains me to hear you guys with these . I have caused half of mine thru martial arts and the other half from car accidents and getting hit by a car once on foot . Age is not your friend with this crap .
I will keep you guys in my prayers that you find relief .

    NO fresh socks???

I was in PT for a couple years with my back. I spent about 1.5 years of that time with at place. Then I went to guy who did more for me in 6 months than the previous year and half. I watched him work on a guys shoulder that has seized up. He had no use of his left arm to start, the nerves had become pinched and the arm had atrophied in the begging. He was to the point purely through PT that he could lift his left arm until it was 90 degrees to his body. It helps to find someone with lots of experience.

The PT was telling us how back in the day, they would put someone under and break a shoulder like that loose, sometimes breaking the arm. Always remember, movement lube the joints. We as mechanics tend to be very strong in out dominant hand and leg because we it so much. This a-semtrical nature of our muscles causes imbalance and misalignment of joints leading to pain.

My wife has this happen to her while she was a nurse. She had a patient that was overweight and would constantly turn on his call light to be re-positioned and she strained/pulled something in her left shoulder. She had the surgery(several years ago now) and is better. It’s not a super invasive surgery, it took an hour or so.

It might be worth bringing tos with a doctor and seeing a orthopedic doctor. Mine started off as a once in awhile flare up and got progressively worse till it was just all the time. It’s such a un know disorder a lot of people go untreated from what I was told. So it maybe more common place then know. If you have it and it progresses like mine did it’s 100% debilitating. I’ve been out of work for 8 months because my left side became absolutely useless.

Did this start out as minor numbness at first in a hand or maybe a feeling like carpel tunnel but not, and a feeling like a pinched nerve that comes and goes?
For me it started as a neck issue. I would do something and my neck would “explode” in pain and lock up. I couldn’t turn my head or move my neck. Then it progressed to neck and my shoulder then neck shoulder and numb arm then neck shoulder arm and ribs. Symptoms can be vastly different from person to person.
