I am building a new gun (7 SAUM on a Bart 2b contour) and had the muzzle threaded. If I hunt without the brake will my POI be affected by a thread protector that extends beyond the tip of the barrel?

If you need more info, I am using an Area 419 Hellfire that has a base which can stay anchored to the threads and I can just remove the brake body.

Thank you for your help.

I think going from the brake to the thread protector I would expect a small POI change. Something in the realm of 1 MOA or less would be consistent with my experience. I just changed from one muzzle brake to another of a totally different design and only had to adjust my zero by .1 mils. I almost always see some POI shift when changing something on the muzzle.

The largest POI shift you are likely to see is not because of the thread protector, it will be because you don't have the recoil mitigation, along with the difference in barrel harmonics because it no longer has the significant weight of the brake (and the additional harmonics change due to redirecting the gasses)

Wouldn't you just go to the range after it's built and shoot with and without the thread protector and record your dope for later?
The range I shoot at only has paper out to 300. I am worried that changes in POI might not be consistent. E.g., if it's 3 inches wide at 300 will it be 5 inches off at 500, or will things get weird and suddenly I'm 7 or 8 inches wide at 500.

I expect to have to do testing for dope but am asking you all so I can keep an eye out for the unexpected.

With the same exact loading, I would expect to see a different both in POI and also in group size, going from a brake to a thread protector.

Your barrel harmonics will change, likely changing your group size.

Just how much change? Only testing it will answer that. It may not change, but it likely will. At least that has been my experience

Yes it will change that much and if anything more. I have shot with and without and even @ 100yds it's several inches
with a heavy barrel, a pencil barrel will be even more. You have to shoot it both ways, you can guess all you want...……….
It's about harmonics and weight vs very little weight and harmonics that are or are not on the end of the barrel.
