trying to pick out another hunting rifle. tikka has pretty good feedback and has a decent lefty selection. just wondering how the 180-200 grain factory loads (elk) are working in their 1-11 twist barrels? anyone know why they don't do 1-10? this will be for hunting and almost definitely no further than 4-500 yards, so maybe twist rate doesn't matter much at or within those distances?

Not sure this will help but I’ve had good luck w 180’s out of a 1/12 twist 308 and I believe that’s the general consensus. Plug the ballistics into JBM’s stability calculator and see what you get.

I was bored. Plugged in all the numbers from factory Hornady eld x 200 grain (I don’t believe this ammo is available yet) to JBM stability calc. 1/11 twist stability was gtg.

thanks! i haven't tried this app/program, at least yet. maybe this belongs in the stupid marksmanship forum, but is there a distance limitation on the stability or maybe it ties to dropping below speed of sound?

I’m no expert in transonic stability but w the muzzle velocity used (2820) and the bc of that bullet I don’t think you need to worry. You’ll probably be over 1100 yards before the bullet enters transonic flight.
