I tried to like it in its original dress. but just too dammed ugly so had to dye it.

Next month I can afford a pst viper and some rings

Re: tikka sporter stealth mod

Man, I handled one of the earlier models of these in walnut today... Incredible feeling gun, it was unsightly to me, picked it up and I was instantly in love.
Just fantastic, had I not just sent my 308 to GAP, it may have come home with me.

Please update on how she shoots, I rather like what you've done.

Re: tikka sporter stealth mod

Thank you for all the comments. Very mixed opinions as to the results. As was mine especially since I have not shot the gun. I must have a girlfriend and a gun that are easy to look at. I improvised solved the problem. nice curves and pleasing to the eye.

The rifle is a Tikka T3 sporter. 6.5swede 1:8 twist 24bbl and a crispy trigger at 2.5#. weighs nine pounds but the guns fits so well snuggles to my cheek without moving my head when standing and the weight disapears. Almost as good as my trap gun

To the hide member requesting what I did here you go.
I am a complete novice on finishing wood of any type. These instruction come from the guy at woodcrafters and tandy leather. your mileage may very. my rifle is brand new I was scarrrred

1. if you want the grain to hint through the black use wood dye at woodcrafters {behlen will not raise grain] nothing interesting and unique about the grain on my gun so forget that . Tandy leather dye no grain black or brown will work. get the small novice me got the large used a quarter of the bottle.

2. sand down to wood. any finish remaining on the stock will show through. the dye will not penetrate the coating on the gun {look closely at the picture above see the what looks like orange marbleing. I liked it so no refinish} . I used 100 grit small sander about 2 hours {60 grit is too fast too much material, the finish laughed at 220grit}. I got 95 percent of my sanding done at this step. tikka put a tough finish on this gun.

3. (wear gloves get a plastic tub this will ruin anything)if you want complete no grain black or complete brown use leather dye. brush on let dry about 5 minutes. did this for about two hours so whats that 10 coats. on the last coat wood was saturated let it settle but not dry and go over it with some 220 sand paper I did not want a completely smooth stock I wanted some texture so this was really light sanding. I just to knock down the raised grain not even the whole stock

4. let the stock completely dry about 4 hours for me I had a fan blowing on it. go over the stock with some number two steel wool. knocks off any gunk crumbs what have you.

5. one can of rustoleum matte clear finish this was all homedepot had. light coat let dry then some #000 steel wool to smooth out. did this until the can was empty maybe 7 coats

good luck
