My wife and I are thinking of going to Yellowstone and the surrounding region for a week or so. Anyone got any tips for places to stay, things to MUST see. Has someone been ona package trip they recommend? Thanks

Re: Tips for Yellowstone vacation.

Go in July when the Beartooth pass is reliably open. It's a great ride and nice photo op.

Also try to spend some time near the south entrance in the lowland marshes. It's a real hoot to watch the company tours from the pacific rim countries..............they seem to want to try an pet the mooses (meece?) it's another great photo op.

Really, there's just no bad way to experience Yellowstone.

Yellowstone is a beautiful place, I have stayed in west Yellowstone and Gardiner(?) both beautiful places. Like Micheal said there is no bad way to experience it. I would suggest September, that to me is when the park is the most beautiful. Might see snow then though, but I have seen snow in Yellowstone in July. Either way take plenty of pictures and just enjoy one of the most beautiful places on earth. If you have time you should go through Grand Tetons park also, it to is very beautiful.

I agree with Sept. Most kids go back to school by the first week in Sept. anymore. That will make it so you aren't in bumper to bumper traffic the whole time you are there like it is July and August.

If you'd like to experience early Spring in Yellowstone, I'd go over Memorial Day weekend. Green and snowing, warm days and cool nights. Plus you'll beat the crowds that show up for the summer.

Re: Tips for Yellowstone vacation.

Check out the museum in Cody - a must. You may even be able to catch a local rodeo while you're there.

Jackson Hole is a little over the top as a tourist trap but it is worth seeing. Catching a ride on the ski lift at the end of town is a pretty nice way to break up the day with a walk on the hill.

The Lodge at the park is worth checking out / staying at.

Horse / wagon rides through parts of the park are a nice way to take some of it in.

Good luck

Re: Tips for Yellowstone vacation.

Here is only a piece of Yellowstone. I got with in six feet of this bull elk, he laid there and watched me the entire time as I walked about 150 yards across a meadow to him.Aug.06 The "adrenalin oh shit" feeling was riding buy the buffalo herds, when there going across the road in front of you. And the huge buffalo bull (as tall as the dodge mini fan) standing in the oncoming lane stopping traffic. Finally a big ford dually truck from the park came and actually pushed the buffalo to get him to move. Then I was suppose to ride by this monster when he was standing there in the ditch all pissed off. Was not a warm and fuzzy time! LMAO

Yellowstone anytime is outstanding!

Visit Henry's Lake in Idaho. Some of the best trout fishing in the world. Another nice day trip is to drive to Ennis Montana or Jackson Hole, WY.

Have Fun...

Re: Tips for Yellowstone vacation.

My favorite place for vacation.
If camping we love staying at Norris campground. It's in the west central part of the park and you can spend the day going north or south with plenty to see. We have pics of elk right in our campsite, coyotes, fox and lots of other critters to see, some a little too close.
Just out of the park is West Yellowstone and there is a shop/outfitter for fly fishing. They have free lessons and were not pushy to buy or use their services. We spent 3+ hours (my son and I) and learned so much. http://www.jacklinsflyshop.com/ is the place and the lessons are on Sunday (it's on the web site).
Take at least a 2g card for the camera there is so much to see.
And there is an IMax theater in West Yellowstone http://www.yellowstoneimax.com/ and the movie Yellowstone is very good.
I also found this site had lots of info

Check out the live web cams too.

Enjoy,
Mike

Re: Tips for Yellowstone vacation.

Try it in winter. Can't camp out and there are just two of the lodges open, but it was amazingly beautiful and a fraction of the crowds to deal with. The best for me was taking off cross country skiing with my camera and not running into anyone for hours at a time. Peaceful.
