To ACCUTRIGGER or NOT TO ACCUTRIGGER...This is the question...

The SHORTY RIFLE THREAD IS MY FAVORITE THREAD...PERIOD...

OK...I think I want an Accu-Trigger for my next build, already have a LA Tactical stocked 308/243AI switch barrel rifle for target, long range, FTR and F Class...I want a hunting rifle, a walking the woods, climbing the hills...hunting rifle.

Scrounging up parts for a Savage M40ish 16" heavy barreled Hunter in 308...Monte Carlo style M40 clone stock, SA, 16" threaded barrel, 10X Mil/Mil scope. Primary use is deer hunting here in Virginia/NC and maybe a trip to NZ's South Island to hunt as we go there a couple of times a year...want something light(er) but still capable of some longer shots, its a mix of forest and alpine hunting there...

I have been trying to find an accu-trigger SA as I was thinking of getting the target red blade, sear and spring to get a really nice trigger pull, also saving a few ounces in overall weight...the classifieds has them rarely...or get a Flat Back LA and an SAV-2 and tune it?

The classified has very OFTEN older flat back LA's...there are also more donor Monte Carlo style stocks out there in LA too...this would also allow me to barrel it in 30-06 for a little more umph...I know all the arguments about shorter barrels and FPS losses...the 30-06 out of a 16" barrel is still 200-300 or more FPS faster than 308 out fo a 16" barrel with the same bullet weights...

So is waiting for the right deal on an Accu-Trigger SA worth the weight (pun intended)? Or just pull the trigger (again, pun intended) on a Flat Back LA or the next Accu-Trigger LA that comes along and go with 30-06?

Something like this...

Or like this except Savage vs Rem...

I have 2 savages one with the original style trigger and one with the target accutrigger. IMO, unless you are a huge trigger snob and need a 1lb +or- trigger I'd say go with the original style..... With minor adjusting, stoning, and polishing I was about to get a very nice and safe 2lb +or- with my original 12bvss pre accutrigger with no creep and no noticable overtravel(FYI, my 12bvss trigger was factory adjustable for pretravel, overtravel, and weight).

Yeah...I hear ya...1.5-2.5 is where I'd like to be and I can get that reliably out of the old flat back 3 screw triggers with some stoning and polishing...and still be very reliable...still on the fence about the 308 SA vs 30-06 LA...hmmmm

I guess I'll throw my opinion on this too. Both of my savages are short actions and I wish at least one was a long action just for the fact that it can be easily converted into to so many more calibers if you decide you wanna go from 308 to 284win, 30-06, 300wm, or whatever short or long action caliber you want with-in the limitations of the action. Plus if you stick with a short action caliber in a long action and you want to seat the bullets out far for a long/custom throat you won't be limited by magazine length.

I have no issues with the Accu-Trigger. I own two modern Savages with that trigger, and my older Savage has the SSS trigger that was used by Savage during the interim while doing the Accu-Trigger development; although my SSS was bought and installed during that interim.

My only complaint with Savage is that they don't make an LR capable factory rifle chambered for .280 Rem.

I have always been a firm believer in Savage's design of their Accutrigger. I have always changed out my springs, stoned, honed, and polished those triggers to make them do exactly what I wanted them to do. However, I was at a shoot today, and I ran into some problems with it. When I did my modifications, I did literally hundreds of dry fires, cycling the bolt quickly and trying to be as efficient as possible. And then...

I ended up having to hold the trigger forward to get the sear to catch. Very frustrating to say the least. I had to tear down my rifle between the 2nd and 3rd stages to correct the problem. The fix, by increasing the spring tension from 1.5# to somewhere around 3#. The fix worked till shot #6 of the 4th stage, and it happened again. I still managed to get the sear to catch by using my finger to keep it forward, but what a pain it was!!

I have previously used a SSS Competition trigger, but I didn't like it, and quickly sold it. IMHO, the Rifle Basix SAV-1 is about the best trigger out there for the price. The trigger is the weak link on Savage rifles, and I will be changing this trigger out as soon as possible. I am completely confident in my gear, but this weak link has got to go...period. I don't want to end up taking all of the time during each stage to ensure that my sear engages correctly. Rifle Basix, here she comes!!

I just installed 3 target springs in my AT savages, I have a LA Sav with the Sav 2 , I prefer the AT. Adjusted the New target springs down to 1.5 pounds, I might up this to 2.0 or somewhere between after shooting them some more but they break clean and I do like that safety, it could be that after using the standard spring for 10 k rounds I am used to it though. I like my AT's better than my Timney 510 on my remmy.
