To Soft?

Re: To Soft?

Pure lead is too soft.

Take the alloy that you bought and mix in 1lb of MAGNUM shotgun shot to 19 lbs of alloy.

When you knock the bullets out of the mould, drop them straight into a bucket of water.

You'll have nice hard lead that will show very little tendency to lead in those calibers, even in a Glock barrel... and yes, I routinely shoot cast in my Glock barrels without any issues.

Re: To Soft?

If I use 1.8 lbs at a time, how much shot should I add? Also, is the shot something I can get at walmart? Thanks

I will be shooting these cast out of my nighthaw, wilson and sigs, anything to look for?

Re: To Soft?

Check it with your thumbnail. If you can dent or scratch a cast bullet with your thumbnail, It's too soft. Shining it where it rubs is OK. But no dent or metal moving.

Re: To Soft?

1.8lb/19lb = x.lbshot/1.lbshot --> x=1.8*1/19 = 0.095 ~ 0.1 lb

You can get this stuff from Cabela's, Midway, or any other reloading supply store that sells shotgun reloading stuff. It must be magnum shot though, the antimony content is much higher in the mag shot and that's a big contributor to how hard the lead alloy gets.

Notice in the midway add that you have lead which is spec'd at 6 HBn on the hardness scale. Wheel weight lead is 14-18 depending on the composition, the wheel weight lead with 1lb of mag shotgun shot in a 20 lb overall vat runs around 35 HBn when you drop it into water.

It's more difficult to size it, but you can shoot it in full power rifle loads and with polygonally rifled pistol barrels like a Glock.

I'd suggest you make more than 1.8 lb at a time or you're going to be there forever casting any appreciable amount of bullets.

For a 100gr 9mm bullet you only get 70 bullets per pound, a 200gr 45 bullet only gets 35 per pound and casting is a somewhat tedious process to setup and get everything hot and working nicely.

Once it's going I usually cast 1000 or more bullets at a time. With 6 cavity moulds and a 20lb lead pot it takes up the better part of an afteroon. I only have to cast 44's about twice a year though if I do a full 50 cal ammo can each time (1200 240 RN's fit in a can).

You should get a copy of the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook and read it start to finish a couple times.

Re: To Soft?

Read more about bullet casting, before embarking.

Here's a nice article on using wheel weights:

Wheels weights

It is not dedicated to using the lead for the shooter, but for boat ballast. But the same rules apply.

Good Luck,
