The Great State of Texas
Went to the Central Texas Tough Mudder this past weekend.

Was my first one and had some fun. I was a bit surprised at how many out of shape people were there actually. But since there is no
time limit you can take all day. In truth, it wasn't all that "tough". But, if you want it to be harder, just run the course faster.

The course was 10 miles with all the typical obstacles.

Enjoyed it enough that I already signed up for the 2015 central Texas tough mudder and the Spartan Race in austin in a week and a half.

Congrats! Those mud / obstacle races are addictive.

Try the GoRuck Nasty. Pretty close to the Spartan Sprints in terms of a physical challenge, and the obstacles are all bona fide military grade obstacle course quality. Hopefully they'll have worked some of the bugs out of managing the race, I ran the first one and there were LONGGG lines at the obstacles which slowed everything up.

I'd like to do one of these events with my son. It seems like a great afternoon.

I checked out the go ruck.

I'm all about adventure races and things of that nature. However, I don't need to sign up for an event that is simply designed to kick the shit out of you.

I don't have anything to prove to myself in the "can I hack it" arena. Been there, done that already. Maybe those people that have never
have been challenged like that before would enjoy that.

I have to be able to enjoy it or I won't bother.

As I learned in the Marines, there is a fine line between hard and stupid.

I don't do 100 reps if 40 gets the job done.

I train with a purpose in mind, not mindless pounding of the body for no reason other than seeing when I'll break or hurt myself.

The TM is a fun race if you push yourself for time. I have ran a few and enjoyed them all. However I think I am done with them. I am tired of having to stand in line to do an obstacle if I don't get in the first heat. I get the enjoyment out of pushing myself and at a course that is only 12 miles or so long I need to keep going to do that. I do have to say the Mudder in Mount Snow VT is an ass kicker. The elevation gain and the grade of the climbs will bring anyone into their hurt zone. If you think you are a hard ass you should give it a try, and a great side bonus the area is beautiful as well. Just sign up soon enough so you get the first heat or do what I have been doing and just starting in the first heat anyway.

I don't want to give off the wrong impression, I do support all the fat asses that go out and give these races a go. My hats off to them and I hope that these races can put their lives on the healthy living path. I always cheer them on when at these events even though they are holding me up. Good on them for giving it a go.

I'm going to complete the Spartan Trifecta this year. I did the Atlanta sprint and will do the Super in VA in August and the Beast in NC in October.
I'm doing them with my middle sister. We started obstacle races last year. We have a blast. It is a chance for us to hang out (our age difference kept us from being very close growing up) and gives me a bit of a personal goal to chase. We are not chasing a time, just completions.
I plan to do a tough mudder next year and maybe the bone frog challenge.

There is no really challenging obstacles. Some require more skill or thought than actual strength. About the toughest is climbing the rope or horizontal wall. These are mainly tough because you are covered in mud.....and throwing that darn spear.....need to remember to practice that one. Worst case is you do a few burpees......And I've had to do a few :)

Did the Super Spartan on Saturday May 17th.

God dam it was rough. All hills and back country trails 9 miles. Saw at least 4 different heat casualties.
At least that one was far harder than the tough mudder I did.

Yeah, there are a couple of GoRuck events.

I'm talking about their obstacle race, they call it the GoRuck Nasty. Basically pretty similar to the Spartan Sprints.

I'm with you on the other ones.

A guy I work with did the one in Vegas a few weeks back. He got shocked pretty good he said and ended up scraping his shin and knee as well.

When he decided to enter this race and was telling me about the obstacles he mentioned the dive into ice water. I told him when you get to that one not to stop and dive in, he said he thought of what I told him just as he made his jump. He said it sucked his breath away just like I said it would. When he made it out the other end people were walking trying to warm up and he said screw this and took off running again.

He said he might try the one in Tahoe.

Did the Virginia Super Spartan this past Saturday. It completely whooped my butt. I was completely unprepared for the difficulty of the terrain (held at a ski resort). I had been working on my running endurance, but there was virtually no chance to run because of the wet and muddy terrain. Lots and lots of injuries and I saw dozens of folks falling with cramps even thought it was overcast, rainy, and pretty cool. I actually welcomef the obstacles to give me a break from the dang mountain.

I'm glad the SC Beast is not at a ski resort.

Oct 4 Dallas Tough Mudder.

If anyone would like to join a team let me know.

Not worried about breaking records on the event, just having a good time with like minded individuals and building camaraderie.

Wish I could do Houston. I did Central Texas this year and am already signed up for next years too. Maybe we can meet up then
