I understand that I can send a rifle to a smith to have work done and he can send it back to the origin of shipping with no transfer needed. My question is if I drop the rifle off, out of state, in person, can he ship it back to my residence with no transfer or will I need to have it shipped to an ffl? Thanks in advance.

Re: Transfer question

Yes, he can ship it back to you with no transfer, provided you are not a prohibited person:

(I7) Is a licensed gunsmith’s return of repaired or customized firearms to their owners subject to the Brady law, including the provision for making background checks on transferees? [Back]

No, but it is unlawful to transfer a firearm to any person knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that such person is a felon or is within any other category of person prohibited from receiving or possessing firearms. (See also Question P24.)

[18 U.S.C. 922(d), 27 CFR 478.32(d)]

Re: Transfer question

It is your rifle already and it is not transferring to another buyer so it can come back to you from the smith. I have done that numerous times through UPS. No dealer needed in this action.
