Hi guys, I'm traveling to London next week, I want to ask if I can carry my Steiner scope in my carry on luggage in and out of London?
many thanks.

My concern it’s is 5-25 H59 reticle military scope, and I don’t know the laws about carrying a scope in the carry on luggage in that country

Hi,

Please see linked US Munitions List Sec 121 in which controls what items are required to have a US Department of State approved export license. Please note Category 1 subsection F controls rifle scopes.

https://www.pmddtc.state.gov/regulations_laws/documents/official_itar/ITAR_Part_121.pdf

Here is attachment that outlines instructions and requirements for both temporary and permanent export licenses.
Section III for temporary export requirements.

Sincerely,
THEIS

Scopes with over 9x zoom require an export license from UK. Also for internal travel within European Union.

Besides that scope is so big that you are most probably not allowed to take it to the cabin as it can be used as a club i.e. Weapon.

So leave the scope at home or do not travel to UK with it.

He's not exporting anything because it's not leaving his possession. None of what you think applies, applies to this situation.

OP, you're asking in the wrong place.

Buy a membership in the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) https://basc.org.uk/ and then contact them IMMEDIATELY to explain in the detail the reason why you're travelling to the UK with a rifle scope and LET THEM advise you of the legality. They are experts in UK firearm laws and provide complete advice and assistance to their members on this and just about anything related to shooting or hunting in the UK.

You need to get this done right now to find out if you need any permits or licenses from the police service covering the are you're visiting and how long that would take.

Nobody here knows what the fuck they are talking about.

Hi,

308P you are absolutely WRONG lolol....read what constitutes as a temporary (Bringing out of USA then back in) export!!

Read what is required to get the temporary export permit.

Section III of this link... https://www.pmddtc.state.gov/licensi...arms012013.pdf

None of that shit matter if the scope in question is not "manufactured to a military specification", which I seriously doubt the OP's scope is.

Plus if you were right Americans who travel to Canada for precision rifle and long range rifle matches would be in violation too. Don't see that happening.

Hi,

Well since Steiner does not make a "Hunting" classified scope in the 5-25x with H59 then I would say he has a "Military" classified scope so that shit does matter!! Just as I said in my original reply to him.

THEIS

Hi,

The DDTC has different cooperation treaties with Canada.
To temporary export your firearms and other USML Cat 1-3 items to CA you will need to have the following:

License Exemption application with CPB Form 4457
Canadian RCMP 5589/ CAFC 909

Sincerely,
THEIS

Which military specifications, US or NATO, is his particular Steiner scope made to?

Hi,

That does not matter since Steiner themselves says the following. And since they advertise and market it is that and have not filed for a commodity jurisdiction to have the scope removed from DDTC control and handed over to US Department of Commerce EAR control.

The German-made M5Xi series features world-class engineering and optical systems, built to strict military specs and precisely crafted for victory – on the battlefield, or in competition. The 5-25x is the ultimate sniper scope for long-range platforms and large calibers. High power and equivalent elevation travel extend your range beyond 1,500 meters, with outstanding visibility even in lowest light.

Just call Donald Fanning at DDTC and have him explain ITAR USML Sec 121 to you. I have provided the official documents for you to review but yet you continue to try and argue with them lolol

Sincerely,
THEIS

Steiner MX5i 5-25x25 was just recently chosen as the new sniper scope for Bundeswehr new sniper rifle G29. It can not really get much more military spec than that.
