Well I picked up my long overdue TRG22 in 260 rem yesterday and it looks really good. Tonight I attempted to remove the scope rail that came with it so I could intstall my Near 20MOA base that I recieved in January this year. I am unable to remove the chicken shit slot head screws that are attaching the rail to the reciever. I am using a Brownelles gunsmith type screw driver set that precisely fits the screws and the slot just crackes off. It seems odd that Sako would use such a sorry method of attachment as a slotted screw when everything else on the rifle is a hex type attachment. I will spare ya'll what I really want to say on this subject. 6 months overdew and this. Guess i need to find a gunsmith to send it to and have them drilled out'

Re: TRG 22 .260 Scope base removal

the rail thats on its is a 20moa.

your right on the screws.i was suprised too see them.
you think on a $3000 rifle they would use better screws.

get out and shoot it.you will soon forget about those crappy screws.

Re: TRG 22 .260 Scope base removal

When I placed my order in early January I specifyed that I didnt want the rail that came with the rifle because the optic that I was going to use would not work with the OEM base because of eye relief reasons. I was credited with the difference on the total price.

Re: TRG 22 .260 Scope base removal

I do have some other optics that will work with the factory bases as far as eye relief goes. It still goes back to a sub standard attachment method. If I was a grunt I wouldnt know any better but the guys that are buying TRG 260s are using there own money and should have the option of setting up their rifle without taking a torch to their new toy.

Re: TRG 22 .260 Scope base removal

I had the same problem with one screw on my TRG 42. I finally found a snap-on bit that would remove the one screw that stripped the head. Just thought I would share that the screws are no better on the 338 Lapua version either. Keep looking you may find a bit that will remove that stripped screw. Good luck

Guys,
Sako loc tites the shit out of every thing. I wanted to move the front sling point to the other side, I was fighting the screw until I got my little butane torch and warmed up the head, then it came out with out any problem. You might give it a try before you really bugger up the screw heads.

Good to know this stuff. Sorry the OP had to find out the hard way. I forgot thet were coming with a 20 moa base. If I ever switch to a Spuhr mount I'll be extra careful removing the base screws.

Re: TRG 22 .260 Scope base removal

Not my first choice but I have my 4-16 Nikon tactical mounted on the factory base. I will be able to give this 260 a workout in the morning.

Re: TRG 22 .260 Scope base removal

Its not that difficult to remove screws.
They are almost always loctited, and those needs to be lightly heated.

But if there is poor screws and they are getting destroyed the easyest way of removing them is to use a drill press, where you put a screwdriver bit in the chuck and rotates the chuck with your hand. This way its very difficult for the screwdriver bit to slip the screw.

Re: TRG 22 .260 Scope base removal

I ordered mine with their 3 ring mount instead of the rail, but when they arrived , Alex said Sako installed 20 MOA rails on all of the sent rifles. Sako was suppose to send the rails seperate. Alex said their smith could remove the installed rail and I talked to him and he told me that he would have to heat the screws up to remove it.

Re: TRG 22 .260 Scope base removal

The wind down here in South Texas is running around 30-45mph today so my range report isn't too good. Guess I will try to heat up the base screws so I can remove the factory base, if they wont come out I'll find someone to machine the heads off so I can install my Near rail. Then I can mount my 3-18 IOR.

Re: TRG 22 .260 Scope base removal

Messed a couple of heads up on mine when I tried to take it off to move it back on the receiver. Just mounted my scope and don't notice them now. Hit the range yesterday and managed to got a few good groups even though wind was howling pretty good. However, the velocities were less than I expected so I then took notice that the barrel appears to be 24" (receiver shoulder to end of barrel) and not the 26" spec'd. How long are your barrels?
