Trim to length question

I just bought a sinclair max chamber length gauge. I trimmed my case way back, inserted the soft steel gauge in the case and got a maximum length measurement. My question is how far back should I trim it. It just so happens in this particular rifle it tends to like near maximum charges for accuracy. What is a good Trim to length in this case? I was thinking -.003. Any thoughts? Thank you for the help

Re: Trim to length question

Three thou is enough, I would round up to 5, I just don't seat with the camp that says a few thou exra neck means squat.

I would just keep it consistent and rock with it, I can tell you it is rare if you really look at them closely, to keep your shoulder within 1 thou of each other, so if your trimmer indexes off of the shoulder, it will induce that much difference--one thing I DON'T like about my Giraud.....

Go 5 thou short, and check em after firing and sizing them next time to see how much they grow...

My suggestion is to pick a number of no more than .024 and go with it, I do .010 on 308 and 260

Re: Trim to length question

For my match rifles I trim to max -.005" Anything else like hunting rifles are max -.010"

For -.005" and less, temperature and chamber dirt, (fouling) can cause hard chambering. Just something to be aware of.

Hell no I'm not! I can barely measure it!

Which is another reason I don't sweat things being near max tolerance, it just ain't worth it to me, I always check results on the target face!

Good point by Victor, you get things too close, and something throws a thou or two into the mix that you didn't factor in, and No-Go.
