Hey guys,

I ordered a Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x40mm for my X Bolt 300 Win Mag.

I am getting some conflicting information on the elevation of the scope. I have seen people online stated that it is 100 MOA of elevation adjustment, but Leupold's site says 72 MOA of adjustment.

Can anyone tell me what the actual elevation of this scope is? The product number is 56140

Re: True elevation of Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x40mm

On a perfect alined receiver and bore and if it's clocked perfect, 72(up and down total) is the LOS number. I've had custom built sticks from Names here, and had to leave 2-4 on the table, mostly do to wind-age.
Remember even with a 20 base on a 72 scope that only equates to 56 of up but you still have to subtrack 3 on your wm for drop to 100 vs LOS. So now you have ruffly 52 of up to work with.

Ie,... If it only has X total 50% of that is down. When you use a canted base you are only picking up that number from the 50%, if your using the ctr X as your aiming point. Even then, you have to subtract the flight drop to 100 from LOS

All my holds for 100, are at the very top of all my scope's, I quit dialing years ago for most everything. My IPHY scopes have 60 IPHY of holds with detailed hold point between start an finish.
If I'm using a Mil-dot my 100 is at the thick and thin at the top, if I need clear target view at 100 I'll dial down 3.5moa and use the first dot from the top. My slowest .308 runs out of Mil-dot reticle at 950yds, but it was not built for that engagement range in the first place(short barrel). If I did need to push it on out, I still have plenty of up in the knob, left.
My 300 gets to a grand with 24.5-26 IPHY, depending mother, and 1550-1600yds w/o touching the EREK, if I need more it's still there to dial up.
Dialing is for zeroing, thereafter it is a waste of time,... time you may or may not have.

I tried to make this point about dialing vs. using hold over. Really matching reticles and adjustments are nice, but I dare say that they arent something you have to have. Its a personal choice really. To me its a lot faster making corrections or follow up shots with your reticle vs. trying to dial them in-hence matching adjustments are really only truly an advantage when zeroing your scope or finding dope for known ranges on a calm day! Don't get me wrong mathcing reticle and adjustments make more sense for the person just getting into the game of long distance shooting.

On my .308's with the MDMOA reticles (USO), my 100 yd is at the 20 above the X which puts my X at 700yds and a full hold is 1265 +/-. Same on the 300wm the ctr x being just shy of 900yds and a full hold is 1600 +/-
The Leupold 2.5x8x36 Mil-Dot on my short barreled .308 is a good match. More than enough for target ID for it's intended range of 800 and in, and still is a very light package to tote w/o issue. Wish it could have been had in FFP but, as is, it works very well. I've many 2.5x8's and love them all

As to the original question being asked, one way to find out (which I did on mine about ten minutes ago,) turn the knob one way til it stops, and then go back. Mine is older and when I bought it 7 1/2 years ago Leupold stated it had 100 MOA total elevation travel. I counted 100 on mine. Hope that answers your question.

Some models of Leupold's do, all three of the newer so called Mk-4's I ditched, only had 72.
