I am trying to find a rimfire to fit my youngest daughter. I have been trying to take my 5 and 7 year old girls shooting more recently. We went today and shot some balloons at 50 yards. My 7 year old did okay with my Savage BTVS 17 hmr, but the 5 year old's arms are just too short. She got frustrated and gave up pretty quick. The rifle didnt fit the 7 year old perfectly, but she did well enough to pop about 15 balloons in about 18-20 shots at 50 yards. They were pretty small balloons too.

I own one of the tiny little Chipmunk 22's. I have 2 issues with it. It is almost too small and I dont like the sights. The rear sight is a TINY little aperture sight. I would like to mount a small. low powered fixed optic on it. But the way it is made there is only a place for one base. The rear of the receiver is notched for the bolt to travel rearward. I suppose I could find a way to mount an optic on there, but it would be difficult.

Does anyone know of a rifle that is sized right in between the BTVS and the Chipmunk that shoots well? I would take a 22 but much prefer a 17hmr. I got out of 22's and no longer stock any 22 ammo but have a bunch of 17. I want to be able to mount an optic on it. I may go with some of the "see thru" mounts, as I want them to be able to shoot with iron sights as well, but definitely want them to have an optic.

Re: Trying to find a good 22/17 for my daughter.

There do not appear to be any decent quality youth model 17's on the market, and I cant find a single bolt action youth model 17 available.

So, my next question. Does anyone know of a good youth model stock for the BTVS Savage in 17hmr? I could pull off the nice thumbhole wood stock and just drop the barreled action into another stock. If anyone makes one. I am sure I could get one made, but that would take forever. Anyody know of any options?

Re: Trying to find a good 22/17 for my daughter.

Theres a guy on RFC that makes custom stocks. I was involved in a thread where a father was looking for a youth stock for his son (savage 93 17) and this guy said he could knock one out in a weekend if the guy was intrested. Let me know if you want further information.

Herny,
CZ,
Ruger 10-22, ( which you could modify to a 10-mach.17)+ take off stocks are readily available for $20 and you can cut one down to fit your girls length of pull.

Have fun,

Your patience must be much greater than mine. I have three boys and gave up taking the really young ones shooting. My 13 year old is really warming up to it now. My 6 year old always wants to go....and then asks when we are going home about 30 minutes after we arrive.

Re: Trying to find a good 22/17 for my daughter.

My youngest 2 really seem to enjoy it. The oldest one, now 16, not so much. Great kid, but not much of a Tom boy, LOL.

Cl1K, I am interested. If I could have a stock made for the BTVS, I would definitely go that route, because it is a shooter.

Also, I wasnt aware CZ made a youth model. Going to check that out. Maybe order a small fixed power Vortex from Scott, assuming they make one. Would be a great little package.

Thanks for the help guys.

Re: Trying to find a good 22/17 for my daughter.

It appears that the CZ youth model is only available in 22. I really want a 17hmr.

I may have to get a stock made for the Savage, but if I do, I am going to have to get the barrel cut or it will be terrible imbalanced. This sucks. I cant believe there isnt a quality youth model 17 hmr available, and I was really looking for an excuse to buy a CZ anyway. Seem like great quality little rimfires.

Re: Trying to find a good 22/17 for my daughter.

I have seen and handled the CZ and it is really nice. It was way more than I wanted to spend though for my boys first gun. I know you don't want .22 but what about picking up a used cheapie, cutting the stock and the barrel if needed? I am sure you can always sell it to another in a situation similar to yours with little to no loss.

Re: Trying to find a good 22/17 for my daughter.

I am going to end up with a 17 one way or another, if I have to I will have my Savage chopped and either find a custom stock or have mine shortened. May just send it to a Smith and be done with it.

Wonder if GAP would do it?
