I've got an AR10 with a 20" Mike Rock barrel & a Rem700 with a 26" factory barrel. 175 SMK,44.3gr. RL15 @ 2580 fps from the AR10, & only 2600fps from the Rem700. Both rifles are sub moa with this load. I have two other rifles that are moa or better, but produce lower velocities than other rifles of the same length. If I use the Tubbs product on the Rem700, is there any chance of degrading accuracy? Can I expect any increase in velocity?

Re: Tubbs Final Finish

I have used Tubbs FF on many factory barrels, and have never had any problems, the barrels cleaned easier, and shot better, and yes FF did improve the velocity on most of the barrels.

One more thing, I have never heard of anyone damaging their barrel by using Final Finish. The abraive that the bullets are coated with is finer than the finish lapping compound used by custom barrel makers, so you have nothing to worry about.

Re: Tubbs Final Finish

I usually see 2 different answers to questions like this:

1) from those who have never used it and say stay away from it.

2) from those who have used it and report good results.

Re: Tubbs Final Finish

I have used it on a Savage 10 BVSS in 308 and it cost me the barrel - moved the throat forward about .040" inch and the gun shot awful afterward.

I will never hesitate to discourage everyone from using this product.

But that is just my experience and opinion.

Re: Tubbs Final Finish

Tubbs Final Finish will not damage the barrel. I have used it on a factory barrel, and it made it much easier to clean. I can't comment on the velocity, because I didn't have a chrono at the time. I also use the TMS system.

Re: Tubbs Final Finish

First let me tell you that I have used this product. Second, I would never use it on a custom barrel. A good custom barrel will have already been properly lapped by the manufacturer. In factory barrels I have found, and have read many others who agree, that they shot as well or better afterwards and cleaned easier. I did use the product once on a custom barrel and believe that it did not improve it but did decrease the useful life of the barrel. That was on an AR15 that I shot across the course. I had to retire that barrel after only around 3500 shots. So if it were me I would not use the product on the Rock barrel. I would use it on the Remington. I personally think it will likely decrease the barrel's life but that it would be worth it. So, that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

That's good because it's not supposed to be used on custom barrels.

+100, FF is not supposed to be used on custom hand lapped barrels. The only thing you should use on custom tubes are the TMS bullets.

Re: Tubbs Final Finish

Ok. So sacrifice some barrel life, & move the throat forward, in trade for possible increase in accuracy, velocity, easier cleaning, & more shots between cleanings maybe? I have already used FF on a chrome lined AR10 barrel, with no improvement.(Hence the new Mike Rock barrel) I am planning to use FF on a factory Rem700, a stainless RRA national match AR15 bbl, and an Alexander Arms 6.5 Grendel Hunter Model, none of which, I believe, are custom barrels. The RRA could actually use the throat forward a bit.

Re: Tubbs Final Finish

It will not move the throat forward as much as you think it will. Almost none! I couldnt measure any difference in my rifles at least. And it will NOT decrease barrel life. It might even make it longer because you will need to clean it less. Less cleaning and less friction means longer barrel life. Think about it.

2. Should I use the entire kit?
In order to effectively break in any rifle barrel, the interior of the bore needs to be lapped to smooth/remove the worst tool
marks. Factory barrels will exhibit more tool marks than a handlapped barrel. This is why the entire Final Finish kit is usual-
ly the best choice on a factory barrel, while just a few of the #3 grit bullets from the Final Finish kit will work well on a hand-
lapped barrel. (These same #3 bullets are found in our Throat Maintenance System [TMS] bullets and are the best choice for
handlapped barrel use.)
