Hello, I am wondering what a tunnel server is, and how they work. I KNOW NOTHING about computers, other than how to type. A forum I had joined, shows your ip adress in the header on every post that you make. Didnt know this unitl I signed up and posted there. So that being said, I brought the question up, and it was stated, that its there to stay, not going away, and that if I need to be secure, or am worried, to run through a tunnel server. So now that I have two posts out there, with my ip on it. How do I run through a tunnel server? Whats it do, and is this dangerous?

Thanks

Re: Tunnel server?

A tunnel server allows you to pass your traffic through another system or network. Basically your traffic goes into the tunnel and comes out the other end with that networks IP address. There are various providers on the net who offer this service on a pay basis. Some places offer it for free but it all depends on what you want.

I know that Giganews (an online news group provider) has a VPN service included with their diamond level membership I think which offers either PPTP or L2TP VPN's with OpenVPN being an upgrade.

Here's a wiki on tunneling: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_tunnel

You can also try doing a search on 'free tunnel server' on Google and see what comes up.

Re: Tunnel server?

Google "VPN" or "VPN Concentrator".

It creates a tunnel using a secure protocol su ch as IPSec - all packets are encrypted.

Allows you to run secure data over a non secure network, such as the internet.

And that's right out of the Security Plus test I'm taking monday

sTunnel is free software, not the easiest to set up if you have no experience but I am running it with a shareware web server I am writing..

I need to knock that out as well so I can get back to my CCNP.

Re: Tunnel server?

I REALLY don't like the idea of the forum displaying everyone's public IP.
Depending on population density, it can make it very easy for someone to find you.

A forum like this, with lots of pictures of high-priced toys, could turn into a candy store for thieves.

I don't know the nature of the other forum, but there are numerous reasons why this practice is a bad idea.
It gives a cyber-attacker a specific starting point. It gives a potential nutjob or a thief and general starting point.

When I run my public IP at http://www.whatsmyip.org and click more information, I get a two mile radius of the area around my house.

I hit the link you put up and it went to richmond, some 70 miles from my home. I dont quite understand how this could be used by thieves. I have found quite to my dismay that one can use yahoo people search and other sites like it to locate my exact location....providing they enter my name which isnt posted here. This internet is a tool however and not to have understanding of your tools is foolish. Please teach me more.

Re: Tunnel server?

Thanks for the replies/help.

On the free tunnel servers, is their any that are trustworthy? How would one go about verifying they are? I had pmed Tucker on this, and he said to be very wary that they could download malware or a trojan.

I see that barracuda networks has a tunneling service, for $10. That also gives you acces to your computer from anywhere, securely, if I understand it right.

I will look into sTunnel, and see what it looks like. Guess the only way to learn to swim is to jump in the deep end.

Re: Tunnel server?

Articlight, on the stunnel, on the first page that came up on their website, it said " cryptographic algorithms you compiled into your library." Does that imply, that I would have to do that, because I have no idea what that is.?
