twist rate for .223

What would be the max weight bullet I could shoot out of a .223 1-12" twist, 20 inch barrel? With good stability throughout acceptable ranges for this caliber? Im looking at the weatherby vanguard, but it is only available with a 1-12" twist barrel. Obviously I would like to shoot medium to heavy caliber bullets, due to the benefits...higher BC, wind bucking ability, down range KE ect....I more than likely wont be shooting at coyotes more than 500 yards, I just want the ability to get out there alittle further for some paper punching. In closing I basically want to drain out every possible amount of range I can get out of this caliber, without going to a custom build or a .223ai ect....If this means picking out a different rifle with a higher twist barrel then so be it.

Thanks: Hykin,C

Re: twist rate for .223

1:12 would be hard-pressed to properly stabilize anything over 55gr and it really will prefer bullets from 40gr to 52gr.

If you are wanting to stabilize the heavier, match bullets for extended ranges, you'll need a faster twist than 1:12 to get the job done.

No probs dropping a song dog with 55gr NBT out of a 223

Re: twist rate for .223

Thanks for the posts boys...weatherby is out the window...it seems weird to me why they wouldn't offer a faster rate of twist? Nice rifle just not gonna work for me. Any suggestions on other rifles...I was just looking at the savage and remmy. I seen that the new sps tacticals have a 1-9" whereas the older versions had 1-12".Ill keep browsing around for now though.

How far do you want to shoot?

My Kimber 22-250 is an 1-14" twist and I run the 50Vmax's at 3850fps......it shoots.

Re: twist rate for .223

very nice Brad. I miss our Ruger M77 in .22-250. I will be doing some prarie dog hunting in Wyoming in September with my Rem M700 5r in .223(1-9 twist). going to pick up some ammo in the 69gr, 75-77gr, and 80gr to see if it likes any of that. Ive had solid results with Hornady TAP and Varmint loads with 55gr VMAX.

Re: twist rate for .223

Hykin, I have a Rem700VS .223 1-11 twist, it shot 50gr FBHP fairly well and 52gr BTHP Match Black Hills ok also, .75 @ 100y

I just tried Hornady 40gr Vmax, 5 rounds one ratty hole, at 100yds. 762frafar nailed it, get a Savage. 1-7 or 1-9 twist.

What was the wind like? Barrel life?
.223 and fast twist is a good way to shoot long range for cheap. .308 after that. Both have long barrel life, cheap and make it to 1k in a fast twist.

Re: twist rate for .223

what model Savage has a 1-7? I'm also looking for a factory .223 with a fast twist, until I complete my full build. The SPS Tactical(1-9)is borderline for the bullet I want to shoot,(75Amax).

Re: twist rate for .223

CZ 527 Varmint is a 1 in 9, work well with 70 gr. Berger VLD.
Tikka .223 Varmint is a 1 in 8 and will shoot 80's very nice.
Have shot both and the Tikka is hard to beat for out of the box .223.

Re: twist rate for .223

Check out the Tikka T3. I just picked one up in .223 and it has a 1:8 twist. Great price and I never hear anything bad about Tikka.
