So...my friend Jason calls me last night and say, "lets go shoot some dogs"! Up at 4:30am and off we go to "our" private ranch. The first part of the ranch is rolling hills with many little valleys and drainage's. Wide open, long range work (my favorite kind).
So we set up just below the edge of one of these little valleys and I hike down about 75 yrds and set the call up. Jason sets up on my left about 15 yrds looking up the canyon.
I start the call...using the good ol "lighting jack"....about 7-8 min.s into calling I see a yote inbound from about 700+ yrds down the valley. I watch him and then he goes into a small drainage and back out of it. He stops a few times and looks behind him....I am thinking there might be another one coming.
He continues toward the call and gets to about 75 yrds of the call and stops. He looks at it...looks around....moves in s few yards...and stops. He is about 175-200yrds from me...and down hill. I decide I better take my shot. I hold a bit low on him...and the 75gr .243 hollow point takes him through the chest. He drops right there and makes one feeble attempt to get up. Thats it.
I hit the "pup in distress" call and within 2-3 min.'s a 2nd yote pops up from...??? Not sure where he came from but he is right at dead yote #1 sniffing him and looking at the call. I am hoping Jason see's him and is going to shoot....I can not see Jason from where I am....the yote starts acting scary so again....aimed a bit low...and dead dog #2! He drops right were you see him in the pic. Almost right on top of the 1st one!
We set up some other stands but that was it for the day. Very good day chasing yotes.
Take care,Stan
