Bought these today. I love the CMP.

One is dated to July 1958 and the other is a Oct. 1958 rifle.

Re: Two new projects.

I'm going to use some of the parts I've been sitting on and restore them both. Test them both for accuracy and keep the best shooter. I'll trade or sell the other for a new scope or what ever I need at the time I decide on the one I'm keeping. I should end up with zero in the one I keep and even make enough to paid for a good target or tactical scope. These USMC 40X's seemed to have gone through the roof lately.

Re: Two new projects.

All you got to do is drive to the CMP south store like I did today. There is another one still in the rack and about 10 Winchester 52D actions as well. I'm out of Winchester parts of I would have bought some of those as well. Several looked to be near new. But the parts for them are just not out there any more and I don't need an action in the safe I cant restore. There's some H&R M12's going to be for sale soon if some one wants a very accurate 22 that's cheap to play with. Ken Viani still makes a great two peice scope mount for these that replaces the Redfield sight blocks so you don't have to drill the reciever. Won my first couple 22 matches I shot with a M12 over twenty years ago so I'll be grabbing a couple of these when they come up again.

Re: Two new projects.

513T's and M12 are coming in October. I spoke to both Leon and Melony and they both told me the same thing. There will be some 1903 and 1971 rifles as well and the release of the 16 inch Garand bayonetts are all at the same time. The stores will be packed for several days when they start selling this stuff. There's not allot of any of these items so they will go fast. Better have your paper work ready and get on the CMP email list.

Re: Two new projects.

Finished one today. Took longer than I planned. I could not get correct head space with a factory bolt. I ended up rebuilding one of the bolts with a PTG bolt body from Dave Kiff. Worked like a charm. Head space and firing pin strike are perfect. So I had to throw Style out the window for function and safety. Would have been nice to keep all correct but better it works than not. At least it has been raised from the dead.

Re: Two new projects.

Is that a PTG bolt?

I bought a complete USMC and a USMC barreled action. When I finally get the money, I will get them smithed. The bolts don't match and the headspace is so bad on the stocked one, it barely closes and it won't extract once it does (the first should have clued me to the second... yes, I am an idiot).

Re: Two new projects.

Carter as I stated I used a bolt body from PTG and rebuilt a complete Remington bolt assembly. It was the only way I could get the weapon to headspace with out pulling the barrel and doing a complete set back and cut a new chamber. You should know that Dave Kiff (PTG) bolts tend to be longer than a factory bolt. All of the ones I've used were about .010 longer than a Remington bolt. I've been told Kiff made them longer becuase the most common problem is insufficient headspace. If your rifle is to tight then just have a Gun Smith check them and see if it's the chamber. That's an easy fix with a reamer. If the bolts to long then you have to drive out the two pins going through the locking lugs and pull the front half of the bolt body (Nose) off and have the shoulder turned down to fit. This can be done a little at a time or if your Smith has the proper set up he can take the measurements and do it quickly. Also, some people believe thier rifle chamber is to tight and it turns out there is a burr at 12 O'clock. This happens when the rifle is dry fired. The firing pin can strike the breach face. This can both damage the chamber and the firing pin. Clean the bolts and trigger assemblies good. The oils and greases most likely have harden into a varnish like matterial. A good soaking in Acetone will do the trick. Use a very light gun oil or machine oil to lub the internals of the bolt and I use a squirt of Lighter fluid for the trigger. The lighter fluid has a very thin oil in it and the petrolium will evaporate after it carries the oil into the working parts of the trigger.
