Has anyone here every read the book The Ultimate Sniper by John Plaster. I have had many people tell me it is an amazing book that will tell you almost everything if not everything you need to know about Sniping. Just wondering what yall think about it if you have read it.

Re: Ultimate Sniper: By John Plaster

That's some sniper shit right der, son!

Re: Ultimate Sniper: By John Plaster

My favorite part is where he learned to imitate the calls of European, Asian and African Snipes. They are different apparently.

Another of the many skills I can only dream of as a civilian. I guess that's why I come here.

Anyway it's a great book!

Was it hard to learn to shoot with your index finger cut off? You're a badass in my book.

Re: Ultimate Sniper: By John Plaster

There are lots of good books, Ultimate sniper has an awful lot of good information in it and is well worth the cost. But you have to read others if you can.

Re: Ultimate Sniper: By John Plaster

I read most of it up to the part where he states that the bullet actually rises in relation to the bore of the rifle. No explanation as to why it does this(it doesn't). After that, lost interest for some reason....

You need to ignore all the bullshit. There are members here whose sole pupose is to cause problems. The truth is Lowlight (he owns this place) offers a CLEP test on this book. Contact him about the test. Basically, if you study the book and pass the test, you can CLEP out of the formal school and be allowed to call yourself a sniper here on the internet forum. He can give all the details but very few are able to actually pass it the first time. I think the next test offered will be in April so you have plenty of time to prepare for it.

Re: Ultimate Sniper: By John Plaster

Major Plaster is an historian of sniping, not a sniper. He is experienced in matters military and the book has information of value for the novice. But beware: the earlier verisons had many mistakes; newer versions have fewer mistakes. Some of the pictures are very nice.

Plaster & Lowlight were supposed to have dinner together at SHOT... They never did get in touch with each other...

Frank was always busy somewhere else.

Re: Ultimate Sniper: By John Plaster

I have the book. Got a good deal on it...nothing beats free. It was fairly informal and I liked it...mostly for the shooting knowledge. With that being said, I would not get caught dead reading it in school, nor would I have put the word "Ultimate" in the title, because then you are asking for trouble.

With regards to 'Ultimate Stocks'...they are hardly 'Ultimate' but I do know a lot of people that like them. Mostly us folks who don't want a second mortgage just to buy a rifle stock. :p

Re: Ultimate Sniper: By John Plaster

I got one of those stocks recently to put on a Savage. It's balls and will be replaced as soon as I get around to it.

Re: Ultimate Sniper: By John Plaster

I went to a gunshow in Ashland, WI this morning and lo and behold, there was John Plaster seated at a table. I chatted with him and his (I presume) wife a bit and found out they live just up the road from me. Seemed like an OK guy. I did mention that I have a copy of the first addition of the "Ultimate Sniper" and he told me to send it to him and he'd sign it. I think he may have been calling me on it.

I'm sure he gets a lot of BS'rs. So I'll have to dig the book out and send it to him.

Re: Ultimate Sniper: By John Plaster

In the Military sniper community John is a BONEHEAD!!! LOL

Re: Ultimate Sniper: By John Plaster

Somewhere in our conversation he mentioned that all military ammo (5.56 & 7.62) was Berdan primed. I straightened him out on that and explained how to deprime crimped primers and some of the problems one might run into. I guess he's not into that aspect.

In the current American Rifleman, he has an article about revolutionary war rifles. I haven't read it yet and didn't know that he had written it until he mentioned it.

But, all and all, he's probably laughing all the way to the bank.

There's another show coming up in a couple of weeks in the town he lives in so he'll probably be at that one also.

Oh God, I just pee'd myself.

You forgot you need to pay the $10 p/mo tuition to the online section for 6 months too!

Thanks CKA and Mega...... after the past week I needed some cheering up

Re: Ultimate Sniper: By John Plaster

You missed LL screaming at me at the Cup last month. People actually contacted him to arrange for the test - no shit, dude. He was hopping mad, like Whack-A-Mole on crack.
