I was looking at mid way USA web site and they have shilen stainless match unturned barrel blanks for a cheap price. Whats the deal with unturned blanks? Can you just polish them and chamber them like any other blank you buy? I was under the impression that after contouring a barrel they had to be relieved of stress? If i buy a unturned blank and have it turned, will it need stress relieved? If i have to have a barrel contoured it doesnt seem like much of a savings, after all i would have to pay my smith to turn it. Whats the scoop, why would you buy a barrel unturned? Thanks Lee

if you buy an unturned barrel and have it contoured, you'll either make a new enemy or a more $$$ in it than you can buy what you want for.
One needs a hydro. profling attachment to do it right, not many have them. I've turned cheap ones to do favors but it's a bitch.

If you want a contoured barrel then buy a contoured blank. These straight axles are for people who want to learn how to turn or that want to do a custom contour quickly. They are also great for people who don't really care about weight, balance or aesthetics. Try one out once for grins. Chances are you won't buy another.

I have an unturned blank in 6mm. It was a budget project, the rifle shoots dandy and it doesn't get dragged around the woods.
I built it for a "zero recoil" centerfire rifle for my girlfriend to shoot at the range.
I buy contoured blanks when I build something with a contour. The amount of time and cost of cutter wear to turn a truck axle down is not worth the 25 bucks it saves, and that doesn't even account for the stresses that you can easily impart by contouring it without the proper equipment.

Kinda what i figured. Sure seems like midway sells a lot of these though. I wasnt wanting one, i just didnt know why midway was even selling them! Thanks Lee
