Nov 30 2020 - URSA 3000 Yard Challenge (2021) - Announcement

If you want to possibly shoot the 3K, please read the entire announcement. Online registration is required! Registration closes at 6 PM, Pacific, on Wednesday, April 14, 2021.

Date: Sunday, April 18, 2021

Place: URSA NorCal venue (where we normally shoot monthly events – Upper Lake, CA area)

Objective: Provide an opportunity for the shooters who qualify (see below) to competitively engage steel at 3000 yards (and possibly further) and win a small remembrance of the accomplishment.

Qualification: Shooters qualify who, during regular, monthly URSA-event official practice, qualification, or record shooting, from October 18, 2020 through April 7, 2021, score five (5) or more hits in 10 consecutive shots at 2000 or more yards. The final opportunity to qualify will be the day before the 3K, Saturday, April 17.

NOTE: The use of “2000”, “2500”, and “3000” yards in this announcement are for convenience only. The actual distances will be at least those distances. Actual distances will be announced prior to the event, as will the associated elevations.

Pre-3K Activities on Saturday, April 17th

We will setup the range for target engagement at a minimum of 2000 yards (mostly in the dark) and start shooting as close as possible to sunrise. Please see below and FAQ 13 for info and Course of Fire/CoF, https://www.unlimitedrange.org/operations.html

The Saturday session will run the same way as a regular NorCal monthly event (again, see FAQ 13), thus mimicking a regular monthly event. Specifically:

Seven (7) rounds “practice” for each shooter, then

Three (3) more rounds “practice” followed immediately by 10 rounds (for each shooter) to qualify to shoot record (qualification round), where the shooter must get at least 3 in 10 during the 10-shot portion to qualify to shoot for record.

Those that qualify to shoot record at 2000 then shoot 10 rounds for record.

Shooters that score at least 4 in 10 during record round will then shoot at 2500, where they will get three (3) “practice” shots at that distance and then, immediately, 10 rounds for record.

The ONLY 3K qualification opportunities on Saturday will be during the initial 10-shot (7+3) practice, the 10-shot qualification, and the 10-shot record round at 2000 and/or 2500. The minimum 5-in-10 3K qualification shots can be during any of these opportunities.

Activities on Sunday, April 18, 2021:

The URSA 3000 Yard Challenge (2021)

The 3K will be shot substantially like monthly URSA events except that we will be starting at 2500 (effectively, starting at the second record round in the normal monthly event sequence). Specifically:

Three (3) “practice” shots (actually 0-3, shooter’s choice), immediately followed by ten (10) record shots, each shooter, one after the other (actually, 4-10, shooter’s choice), i.e., each shooter will take up to 3 “practice” shots and then, immediately, up to 10 record-round shots before moving on to the next shooter.

Shooters scoring at least 4 in 10 during any 10-round record round will then shoot the next distance (3000), repeating the above drill, one after the other…IF at least two shooters score at least 4 in 10. Shooting at greater distances (beyond 3000) will follow using the same procedure…as long as there are at least two shooters scoring at least 4 in 10 at the prior distance.

NOTES for the 3K:

a. IF the shooter does not want to shoot the allowed 3 shots during any “practice”, the shooter MUST notify the Match Director/MD of that BEFORE taking their first “practice” shot at that distance, and the MD must confirm back to the shooter that “shooter is shooting X practice shots.”

b. The shooter does NOT have to shoot all 10 record shots (e.g., they may want to conserve ammo for a possible Sudden Death). IF that is the case, the shooter MUST notify the MD that they are through shooting at that distance, and the MD must confirm back to the shooter that “shooter has stopped shooting at (distance), unload and show clear (remove your bolt).”

c. Normal URSA event scenario - we will only be shooting at 3000, or beyond, IF two or more shooters score at least 4 hits in 10 consecutive, record-round shots at the prior distance. Thus no one is guaranteed to shoot for record at 3000, or beyond.

d. IF we have two or more shooters who score at least 4 hits in 10 consecutive record-round shots at 3000, we will set a target at 3500 yards and shoot that distance – continuing to move out in distance until we fail to have at least two shooters scoring at least 4 in 10 at each distance.

e. Final distance “ties” will be settled by way of Sudden Death. If there is a tie for Winner, there will be a Sudden Death and the loser will be Runner-Up. If there is a Winner and a tie for Runner-Up, there will be a Sudden Death to decide Runner-Up.

f. Shooters are allowed one (1) spotter. Because of the limited parking, it is assumed that the spotter will travel to the event with the shooter. Spotters, of course, can also be shooters.

g. The ONLY non-shooter/non-spotter persons to be accommodated at the 3K (or the Saturday session) MUST be traveling with the shooter - again because of limited parking. And, PLEASE, no persons under 18 unless there is a non-shooter/non-spotter person to "watch" that individual (also traveling with the shooter). ALL attendees MUST sign the liability form, the “watcher” signing for their under-18.

h. Even if a shooter has qualified with more than one rifle, they will only be able to shoot one rifle during the 3K (i.e., they will only have one position in the shooting lineup) – see “Clarification” (below).

Clarification: While URSA “rules” note that a shooter may shoot more than one rifle during an event (each such use equating to a separate shooter/rifle combo and thus allowing a shooter to have more than one “position” in the shooter lineup), during the 3K only one rifle per shooter will be allowed and the same rifle must be used during the entirety of the 3K. [The intend from the very beginning (of URSA) was to have shooters shoot more than one rifle to demonstrate competence with more than one rifle. It also helps shooters with more than one rifle sort out which is best for each shooting scenario. The 3K is for qualified shooters, not shooter/rifle combos. Please also note that the shooter does not need to shoot the 3K with the rifle they qualified with. Bottom line, for the 3K, the shooter is qualified, not the shooter/rifle combo.]

Remembrance of This Event

Everyone that qualifies for and actually shoots the 3K will receive an “official” URSA event t-shirt. These t-shirts will include the URSA logo and one of the following “messages”:

“I qualified for and shot the URSA 3000 Yard Challenge, April 18, 2021” (black logo and text on white)

“I was Runner-Up at the URSA 3000 Yard Challenge, April 18, 2021” (black logo and text on silver/gray)

“I Won the URSA 3000 Yard Challenge, April 18, 2021” (white text on bright orange – closest available to “gold”)

T-shirt size and “ship to” info will be recorded at the event and the t-shirts shipped accordingly.

There will be no “I was there” or other t-shirts provided or offered.

Conclusion:

"Registered" shooters will receive a detailed info sheet (details of where we shoot, how to get there, etc.) by e-mail on Wednesday, April 14th, evening.

If you've been looking for an incentive to shoot with us, this may be it. Hope you’ll give it a try.

Those unfamiliar with URSA are referred to www.unlimitedrange.org, in particular, to https://www.unlimitedrange.org/operations.html and FAQ 13, the normal, monthly, course of fire.

ALL wanting to attempt to qualify for the 3K (on Saturday), as well as those shooting the event as pre-qualified shooters, need to "register" using the link to the online form ("Online Liability Release and Build Sheet (form) for shooter") at the top of https://www.unlimitedrange.org/activity event schedule.html In "Event Description" please identify whether you are signing up for the Saturday session or you are pre-qualified for the 3K. Pre-qualified shooters are welcome to also shoot the Saturday session – note that on your registration.

Per ongoing URSA practice, the Match Director will decide whether there are sufficient shooters to proceed with the Saturday session. Registration closes at 6 PM, Pacific, on Wednesday, April 14, 2021.

ALL other attendees (i.e., those allowed as noted above), need to "register" using the online form "Online Liability Release (form) for non-shooters", same page. In the "Status" field please identify whether you are a spotter or "other", in either case, traveling with which shooter. Thanks. Registration closes at 6 PM, Pacific, on Wednesday, April 14, 2021.

Be nice if you can drop a pin on a map for the exact location. Seen the instructions multiple times and still unsure where it is because none of those mountain roads are named on the maps. Hesitant to attempt without knowing where to go.

Its an annual event, this year (for the first time) in NorCal. Well past due to give Lynn a respite from the seriously ugly travel to and from. Also hoping to draw folks from NorNV.

That's fair, I'll be making plans to attend.

Google satellite view provides the "road" names (keep drilling down until they show up)...however some of those road names go in and out without continuity and some are not what most would consider passable. Worse than that, there are virtually no signs where you need them (i.e. on the way up the mountain). While we could provide coordinates to the firing line, that would buy you very little since you have to drive a road sequence which is not supported by what you see on Google Maps

Also, the Saturday firing line will be different from the Sunday firing line - to support engaging both the 2500 and 3000 targets from the same firing line (on Sunday).

I just got off the phone with Lynn and we (mostly Lynn) will make sure you can get there - worst case enlisting one of the know-the-ways to caravan folks from a rally point in Upper Lake. Have faith brother.

I've updated the initial post to provide clarification. The end of the pre-3K section now reads, "The minimum 5-in-10 3K qualification shots can be during any of these opportunities."

Im available to meet anyone at the gas station in Upper Lake in the am before the match starts to follow me up the mountain. I'll also try to drop a pin next time I'm up there for future reference.

Skkeeter - are you talking about Saturday or Sunday? Hopefully Saturday since those already qualified have been up the mounyain at least once (so, hopefully, recall how to get there). Please clarify. Thanks.
