It was part of the Lend Lease Program. We made and loaned them to Britain as their factories had been bombed by the Germans. Britain then loaned it to South Africa as it was part of their colonies I believe. Many here smarter than me, hope they can give some info.

My No. 4 was made at Long Branch, Canada, in '45 and FTR'd in '48. Still had its arsenal tags when I bought it but I've misplaced them, so I'm not sure where it was kept nice and cozy for a few decades. No neat markings that I can find, alas, aside from the FTR electro-penciling on the side of the receiver, but it's all matching.

i got lucky several years ago with one. I met a guy to buy a .22 and he sold it to me and also pulled out a No4 with some original bandoliers and bayo and asked if i wanted it. I bought it for 500.
Turned out it was a No. 4 MKI Longbranch that never got updated to the MKI* and never went through FTR. I found out from the Enfield forum online that it is about a 800 to 1000 dollar gun as very few survived the war in original configuration.

No. 4 Mk.1 and Mk.1* were manufactured as either or. The Mk.1 was never "updated" to 1* specs as it was actually a relaxation of standards to speed up production. Only Savage and Long Branch made true 1*'s. You'll occasionally find the odd Brit made No.4 marked as a 1* but it had the bolt head release of the 1 instead or a true 1*.
The difference between the 1 and 1* amounts to the bolt head release arrangement. On a 1 it's the little spring loaded button to the rear of the action body and on a 1* it's a slot milled out of the guide rail at the front of the action body.
In the post war years some Mk.1 and Mk.1* were updated to Mk.2 spec by having the trigger axis pin relocated from the TG to a block silver soldered to the action body.
Just a bit of useless Enfield knowledge I picked up over the years.

Not useless to me, I love this stuff.
