I have read that barrel wear is generally at the breach and muzzle. I am starting an 18" 308 project. My question is about using a "worn out" long barrel. If I pick up a 26-30" match barrel, could I get a serviceable 18" out of the middle of it? I have 3 match rifles, so that would not be the purpose of this project, simply a reasonably accurate, fun gun for 600 and in.

Thanks for your responses!

there are two areas to be concerned with, the throat and the muzzle. So long as you have enough material to cut 1-2 turns on the breach end, you're good to go. On the muzzle end, cut of maybe an inch and you'll be fine.

if you have a 700...consider PSS pulled barrels. Just do a normal set-back-rechamber and chop the barrel as needed. You'll have cheap accurate barrel that will give you a few thousand rounds of service.
