    One of my cousin’s called tonight to inform me that his wife’s grandfather had passed away. He was a Marine in the 50s & served in Korea. He sends me this pic & asks if I have any idea what this braided cord signifies. My cousin says it was w/ his Blues. I’ve looked online can’t find much on the inter webs. Anybody have any idea? I’m stumped. Thanks gents.

    1950's USMC military police pistol lanyard.

    Type those words in a Google search and you will find that which you seek.

    It certainly does appear to be a pistol lanyard c 1950s. My thoughts initially were that it might be a French Fourragere. After seeing a pic I knew it had to be something else because it wasn't red / green. So, I thought the next best place to look for the answer to my question would be the 'Hide. There's a pretty solid collection of guys here w/ a lot of knowledge. Even if Army Jerry hangs out here, LOL.

    I'm kidding here AJ. Don't get your panty's in a bunch. AJ will be cursing me all night.

    That's a rare item, looks like it was discontinued in 1995. I don't remember ever seeing one while I was in, probably more a "8th and I", Marine Barracks duty or MSG type uniform item where one would have a sidearm worn with blues. @pmclaine, you ever see one of these on MSG?

    Scroll all the way down on this thread, you'll see it and its original issue box, I used the NSN to find a google books reference to it being discontinued and replaced with the OD green lanyard we all knew. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/118025-who-can-help-me/

    As for the French Fourragére, it's hardly a USMC item in US military usage so AJ would never smack talk it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourragère#American_Units_awarded_the_fourragère I'll just rib ArmyJerry a little by reminding 2ID was awarded it in WWI while under USMC command of MGen LeJeune. I have a huge amount of reverent respect to the men who took part in those battles where they were awarded it, I wore it with great pride while I was with 3/6. That was warfare at its ugliest.

    @Redmanss

    Nope. No pistol lanyards on MSG. No provision for one on S&W Model 19.

    I think in the 50s mil pomp and circumstance was more pronounced than it is today. Do kids today even know how to spit shine?

    I have a picture of my FIL standing regular base guard in LeJeune wearing his Fourragere and an Ike jacket with barracks cover. His war gear was white leather or cloth. Charlies with pisscutter or pressed woodlands were standard in the 80s and you wore your field deuce gear.

    and man were their uniforms built nice. His Alpha blouse must contain the wool of three sheep.

    Ever sense everyone started copying MARSOC/SOF and putting hands in pockets things just went to hell.

    French Fourragere. It was awarded to the 5th and 6th Marine Regiment from the French for their involvement during WWI.
    It's not a Fourragere, they have a significantly different braid and adornments. I'd go get mine from my years with 3/6 out of the old seabag in my garage, but a stock image of one will suffice.

    I wore it when in the 3rd ID, they got it at the Marne in WW1 then had to go back again in ww 2, 25 years later, I toured the whole ww 1 and ww 2 battle grounds in France and the low countries while visiting and living over there, I followed the line of march of the 3rd.. I have 4 relatives buried there so got to visit with them, want to do the same in the pacific with the 7th when I retire, have more relatives buried and missing there, will try to find my uncles hand. he was a mean ol off the boat irish accented basterd who loved his shafer beer, hard as nails .
