Do you think the 1.5-6 USO on a .308 for a general purpose hunting gun is enough or would you prefer the 1.8-10x. I personally would opt for the 1.8-10 but the group buy on the 1.5-6x is tempting.

what ranges are you hunting?

Hit up Doc and discuss with him. He will get you squared away fast. Whenever I have USO questions, he is my go to guy.

Mostly it will be inside of 300 but could be further on occasion say 500- 600 yards shooting at vermin in open country I have spoken with doc and he is very helpful he feels 10x may be the go but the 1-6 is priced well reality is 80% of the time 6x is good to go under the spotlight the larger 37 or 44 will be better for light gathering though

"If you can see it, you can hit it."

Palma shooter shoot at 1,000 yards witg iron sights and their eyeball for their optics. Ib other words only you can deside what magnification range is sutable for you, hell, our soldiers back in WWI and WWII made great shits with just plain ol' military 1903's and M1 Grands equiped with irons.

In my opinion, look at the farthest range that you will shoot at, say 600 yards, then you only should need a 6x scope. Because any rifleman whether it be hunter, competitor, military, hobbyist should be able to hit a target at 100 yards with irons.

Take this into consideration and you should be able to hit something 100 times what the power of you scope is (4x would be 400, 5x would be 500, 6x would be 600, and so on).

Hope this isn't confusing and I hope it helps!!

The majority of the hunting that I do is less than 300 yards and I use a Leupold CQT 1-3x and have no problem at all. As stated above if you can see it you can hit especially with more medium to large sized mammals.

I think 1.5 - 6 is more then enough for hunting. IMHO

Re: USO 1.5-6 on .308 for hunting EnoughMagnification?

I got the 1.8-10. My logic was if I was paying that much I wanted it to cover 100% of what I need it to do. Will 6x get you to 600? Of course it will. Will 10x make that shot a little easier? Probably.

I shot a bobcat this morning at 30 yards on 5x. Why? Because I leave my scope on 5x when hunting. No real reason, just that is what I have always done and it works for me.

I am thinking that I will hold out for a 10x at this stage. Also the bigger objective will help under the spotlight.

That was the exact scope I was going to get for my Beowulf to hunt with, but I got a great deal on a NF 2.5-10 FC2 so I went with the NF, The Beowulf is used for hunting, I had a 5x on it before, and it was perfect for hunting. I would go with the 1.5-6x in a second, and not even worry.

I have the Trijicon accupoint 2.5-10 on my 325 WSM. Great for hunting. Although i will be ordering a USO in that 15.X6. Not sure if I will use that for work on my 6.8 SPC of my hunting rifle.
