I just got back from a trip out to Utah where I was visiting a lifelong shooting buddy.
We were lucky enough to meet up with with member sinister(Dave), who we met at SHOT Show this winter, and let him know we would be heading out to
the desert to shoot.
Dave joined us on Friday and brought the goods with him.
We met up and caravanned out to a great shooting location.
He gave us the rundown on how he'd set up his targets before and the angles and ranges that were available in that area.
We were totally amazed when we started setting up his targets and wind flags.
He said he was bringing steel but we did not anticipate full E types and torsos set up from 1300 in to 500 yards from out shooting positions.

Here you can see the targets above the post for the spotty.

We set up between the trucks and started sending rounds down range.

My buddy brought a sporterized VZ 24 made by Kimber in 7mm Rem Mag with my 10x OG Super Sniper & an 8mm Yugo Mauser with a 2-7 scout scope. The scout scope had mil dots but the reticle was calibrated for the low end.
I'd worked with him selecting bullets and he did some OCW testing to find some good loads.
162 AMAX and Retumbo for the 7 and the 196 Hornady with 4064 for the 8.

I brought my 16" AR with a 2.5-10 NF(75 Hornady), 308 with a 6.5-20 Leupy(185 Berger) and 6.5 Rem Mag AI(120 Cauterucio VLD) with a 12-42 NF.

It was in the 90's, with winds varying from mild to positively scooting.
The wind went from full value to head on and we observed the 3 flags going in totally different directions.

We both had apps with firing solutions on our phones but the wind would have eaten our asses were it not for Dave using ballistic tables and calling our shots. My buddy's scout scope ran out of reticle holds and I could not believe it when Dave walked him out to the 700 yard steel using some serious Kentucky windage.

My buddy's 7 was positively dominant when it came to vanquishing the wind.
He pummeled the 700 yard target easily.

Past 700 I had a hard time seeing anything other than the shape of the targets with my 20 and higher power optics.
I got a first round hit at 500 with the AR but canned it around 700 because it was too hard to see or hear hits at the longer ranges due to the mirage and wind.

My first two hits ever at 1000, first round 308 hit followed by a second.
The mirage/wind kicked my ass with the 308.
Daves calls were spot on but the mirage was so bad that I was questioning if my optics were properly adjusted.

My buddy was shooting at the 1K yard target, we could hear it hitting but couldn't see hits, finally Dave noticed that he was pummeling the 1100 yard one. His rifle was shooting high for a 1K and going over and hitting the 1100 yard target behind it. Pretty funny. There's 1 hit from my 6.5 on there also.

Two hits at 1200 from my 6.5 with 120 Cauterucios.
I got a case stuck in my die and ended up shooting my fire forming loads from 500-1200.

Me and my buddy thoroughly dusted, dehydrated and delighted.

I can't thank Dave enough for his generosity and jedi wind skills.
We had a blast and learned as much as one can in few hours from a true master.

One thing I forgot to mention was Dave's AR-10.
I think he had a Badger FTE on that baby.
I was sold on the first shot.
It was such a strange sensation shooting a 308 and not having recoil but feeling the bolt shucking out a case and feeding a fresh one.
I think it had a MK4 2.5-10 with calibrated knob.
What a fun setup for no nonsense steel slaying.

Lars, it was great shooting with you guys. Any time you can get new long-range shooters past a thousand and into new territory is great -- especially when you start hitting consistently.

Here's an old photo of my AR-10T. Nothing spectacular, and she hammers anything you dial on to.

I will take 1200 yards in 95 and 20% humidity over 500 yards in 92 and 60% any day and twice on Sundays.
