Varget hard to meter?

Is Varget hard to meter? I bought a Harrells measure and I have heard it can cut Varget or it get's hung up in the tube.

I plan on throwing a little low then trickling up on the digital scale for the really critical loads. I also have a Redding trickler and I'm not sure how well it will work with stick powder.

Many people are recommending Varget for .308 in my bolt gun.

I like the Varget really well.
It hasn't been hard to meter for me, I'm using a Lyman powder thrower and sometimes a stick will be cut in two while measuring the powder but has never been a problem for me.
Try it.

Re: Varget hard to meter?

A little trick to get used to is set scale for a couple grains less, example if I'm doing 45 grains ill punch in 44.8-44.9 then ill tap the little needed .most of the time it will hit 45 grains. If using an Rcbs dispenser put a McDonald's straw inside tube dispenser ,it ill help meter varget much better.

Meters fine in my RCBS uniflow

Re: Varget hard to meter?

Meters great for me through Lyman 55, and Hornady LNL. Sucks through Dillon. Depends on how exact you are trying to be. I load through the Hornady for 223 plinking ammo. Don't care that it might be +/- a few tenths. I throw light with the Lyman and trickle up.

Are you running a LNL AP? If so, how did you get it to meter? Mine keep cutting into the granule requiring me to assist the hopper arm up. Happens 80% of the time and it's annoying as hell.

Yes. A distant third behind VV N140 and RL-15 in my measures.

Is RL-15 stick powder?

Re: Varget hard to meter?

just got my harrel measure and I have only loaded about 50 rounds with it. I did practice with the thrower for some time, before loading with it.
Once I got the technique down, I can't recall it cutting the powder. There is a little bit of side to side shake and I would add tension inwards to take out that play. This seems to be the way the measure likes to be run as it would throw very accurately. Not doing so, I could vary as much as 1.5 grs with Varget. I have not tried any other powders yet.
It may have been cutting a stick, but I really can't remember it doing so once I pressed inwards. Regardless, the loads were accurate and really consistant, as long as I was.

I actually wanted to start with that but then I read that it's not supposed to be that great in 168-175 rounds.

Sounds like we're in the same boat, but i took the plunge. Buy a pound, if you find it's not adequate, then switch to varget.

Re: Varget hard to meter?

Is Varget hard to meter? It depends on what you call precise!

Need 0.1gr precision: Varget is hard to meter--you need to trickle to get this kind of accuracy with Varget.

Need 0.2gr precision: Varget is on the edge of "Throw and go" here.

Need 0.3gr precision: Varget is "Throw and go" here.

Re: Varget hard to meter?

Using a RCBS uniflow(with Varget), I set it low and trickle up to weight when loading for bolt gun. If you want a powder for .308 that is much closer to the above said "throw & go", try Ramshot Tac. I measure the first 5 with it and then maybe one out of ten after that.
That being said, I like the Varget, 45grains behind a 175SMK is magic!
The TAC is a good load also!

Try some IMR4350; you'll think Varget is a walk in the park after dealing with it.
