varget lot to lot

Re: varget lot to lot

If you are like me and carefully test each new lot, you will find MINOR differences from lot to lot in almost EVERY powder. Some a lot less than with others.

Re: varget lot to lot

I have used 3 different lots in the last 3 years and they were indistinguishable over the chrony and at the target.
Maybe I was lucky but the issue of lot to lot variations with Varget seems overstated based on my experience.
I did have an issue with a couple lots of H4350 many years ago but Varget has been good to me. (so far)
With that said...I still compare performance when starting a new lot. Better safe than sorry!

Re: varget lot to lot

I've used a coupel of jugs (8 pounders) in the last couple of years. After allowing the powder to come up to the same humidity level* these juggs ended up using the same CW in all three of my loads (I use Varget in).

* This happens naturally as you add powder to the thrower, throw a bunch of rounds, and then return the powder to the jug.

My first couple of runs from a new jug (low humidity) always seem a little hot. This settles down as the powder equilabrates to my environment.

{Also note: this is simply my observations and analysis thereof.}

Re: varget lot to lot

I switched to IMR4895 because of lot to lot inconsistencies, but that was 5+ years ago. I heven't heard of anything in recent years of it being worse than other powders.
If IMR became scarce locall I'd go back to Varget as many of my buddies use it with no problems.

Re: varget lot to lot

I haven't seen the lot to lot inconsistencies that others have. It varies some but not as much as some other powders I've tried. I also try to pick up 16lbs at a time, that way I can get at least 2500+ rounds of consistency before I have to worry about what the next lot will be like.

Re: varget lot to lot

I had some inconsistency between 8lb jugs of different lots of Varget as well as a couple other powders. That is why you need to retest your accuracy load with every new lot of any powder, not just Varget. The difference may be minimal or none, but then you are all set for the balance of that lot.

Another reason to buy 8 LB jugs as opposed to 1 LB units. That way you don't have to retest your favorite load often.
