Never tried this until today but always believed thay velocity would increase using mag primers vs. std primers with no other changes. I am using Fed 210 and 215 match primers and getting more speed with the non magnum primers - approx 75fps.. Anyone elses experiences?

Re: Velocity - std primers vs. mag primers

What manufacturer are we talking about?

Some have only a thicker cup on their magnum primers, not necessarily a hotter flame.

I performed a test several years ago with a 7mmRM, WW brass, 150 grain SGK's and 67.5 grains of H4831. I loaded five shots each with different primers. The primers were as follows;

Rem 9.5M
F210M
F215
WLR
WLRM

The F210M gave the highest velocity and lowest ES/SD The WLR was second and the Rem 9.5M was the worst. I've read numerous times that the F210/F210M and WLR are very close in heat range, flame length and duration. If one doesn’t work try the other.

Standard primers are good up to about 68-69 grains of what ever powder, over 70 grains and you'll need a magnum. That was my experience with a 300WM, 300 Jarrett and 300RUM.

Ironically, I use the CCI450 (magnum primer) in my 6BR and 6Dasher, 30.6 grains and 33.3 grains respectively, Varget in both.
