Lurker coming out of the shadows here.

So I'm just getting into tactical competitions and have an astigmatism that makes milling targets really tough. I have been looking at a Nightforce SFP (5.5-22) and Leupold ER/T (6.5-20) but my budget just blew a gasket so I now need to stay in the 1K range.

A local dealer has the Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP in stock and I looked at it today. The MOA reticle is really clear and the FFP I think will really help with my eye sight issues. I spent 5 minutes or so adjusting the magnification and playing with parallax and I was able to still pick out individual lines in the reticle which is unusual for me.

What I want to know is how reliable this scope will be in terms of tracking and returning to zero. I don't plan to bang it around but it does happen occasionally in competitions. I know its not an NF or S&B but it seems to fit my needs.

Any direct experiences?

Also, I've been recommended the Sightron SIII and Weaver Tactical by shooters I trust but they are both SFP like the cheap scope that I'm using now. The reticle is just not as suited to my eyesight as an FFP but if Vortex is less reliable I'll go in that direction and compensate other ways.

Thanks for any help.

Vortex PST'S are good scopes for the money. I have a 6-24x50 SFP. Tracking is dead on,glass clear and tough, dropped mine on floor. Landed on elevation turret, no damage still works great and the vortex warranty is outstanding.I know you wanted FFP experiences but the quaity is the same

Re: Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP Personal Experiences

i actually own a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 and a PST 6-24x50 that i have on two different long range rifles and the glass is extremely comparable. The vortex surprised me how clear the glass is and half the cost of a Nightforce. You wont be disappointed.

Re: Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP Personal Experiences

One thing that I have noticed with the vortex 6x24-56 PST FFP compared to a Nightforce is that when you are near or at the extreme end of the adjustments, the vortex is a lot harder to keep a good sight picture vs the nightforce. Other than that I have nothing but good to day about them. Glass is great, adjustments are true, and the reticle is true as well.

Re: Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP Personal Experiences

I just picked up a PST 4-16x50 FFP. I havent looked through it yet but I have owned a Viper 6.5-20x44 and was very impressed with the glass. At the cost Vortex is sure hard to beat. Especially with their warranty if you should have a problem they replace it no questions asked so to me thats a huge selling point. They may not be USO or Schmit and Bender but hey the cost like a 1/3 to 1/4 the price. I have heard great things about their FFP scopes and am very excited to get mine should be here this week and I may be using it in a match in March.

I just bought a Razor HD. Compared to NXS its very close in glass quality. I am a Vortex fan, my next scope will be PST for my AR-10. Can't decide on 6-24 or 4-16 though.

Definitely keep this in mind. I like to use my scopes throughout their full range of magnification, and it's a real pet peeve of mine when the eye box goes to hell at the upper end of the magnification range. Especially true if you switch between bench and prone where you need a larger eye box to accommodate a slightly different cheek weld.

Wow good to hear that the quality is up there on the Razor model. Thats really impressive and I have actually looked at getting into a Razor HD aswell I really just like the products that Vortex puts out really a great value in my opinion. For your AR10 I would think a 4-16 would suffice just because of the lower power on the low end of the magnification range. But really it depends on the type of shooting your gonna be doing. Either way though from everything I hear they're excellent scopes I seriously am excited to try it out and will probably be buying several more FFP Vipers.

Re: Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP Personal Experiences

I have the 4-16 FFP with MOA retictle on my Mega Ma-ten build and have been very pleased with it. The reason I went with the vortex was the reviews here and the customer service. The scopes have alot of features for the price. I just wish the brightness setting were brighter.

Re: Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP Personal Experiences

I do like the fact that you can adjust the brightness as you want and to turn the illumination off is every other click. With my nightforce, you have to remove the parallax turret to set the brightness which can be a pain. I don't really use the illumination anyway so it isn't much of a problem.

Re: Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP Personal Experiences

I purchased a 6x24 FFP mrad last spring and put several hundred rds under it with my 6.5 CM. Its been a great scope as far as tracking and has really nice glass that was comparable to upper end scopes I've had a chance to use or look thru..a Razor, NF NXS, Leupold M4 and a Bushnell HDMR.

Problems I encountered tho were debris on glass and battery would run down on lighted reticle in the off position. Last month I sent it back to Vortex and they promtly sent me back a new one less than a week later! Haven't had a chance to really use this one yet, so not sure if this one will have the same problems or not.

+'s

Nice glass
Spot on tracking
Lots of features for the money
Lighter weight
Great CS
Reticle

-'s

Quality control, especially on earlier scopes
tight eye box at higher power range

All and all a Great scope for the money, espeacially for a entry level FFP scope.

My 2 cents

Re: Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP Personal Experiences

I have both as well and DID notice that at the higher power the Vortex is a bit tougher to get lined up on. The Night Force is the go to scope but if your strapped for cash Vortex is a great option.

Re: Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP Personal Experiences

If you are shooting tactical type competitions then FFP is the way to go IMHO, which really narrows down the playing field, especially in the sub $1000 price range....btw I have a PST 6-24x50 FFP and like it so far....
