Has anyone used their Vortex Razor HD 5-20x50 to shoot at paper targets.

I'm wonder if at low power say 6x at 200 yards does the reticle lines or line become very small and hard to see?

Then when shooting at say 16x and 600 yards does the reticle lines or line obscure the target?

I will not be using scope to shoot at paper targets exclusively and I would prefer FFP if it's practical for me.

Incredible scope, just got one on monday. Its probably the best all around thickness on a FFP that I have seen. Its still usable on five and even turned all the way up with the open center you can still be very precise. EBR-2

Did you or anyone else look the retical on the IOR-Valdada 3.5-18x50? I'm considering that scope too but I'm concerned that FFP retical MP8 will have lines that cover to much of a paper target,if trying to shoot tight groups, at higher magnification levels.

I did a side-by-side with the Razor and the IOR. Reticle thickness is one of the reasons I decided on the Razor. BTW, a neat trick trick with the EBR-2 reticle for precision work... dila down 1 mil and left or right 1 mil and use one of the small "Christmas Tree" dots as your aiming point. I can see a clay pigeon at 1500 yds this way.

Would the same be true as far as thickness of reticle lines apply to the EPR-1?

Re: Vortex Razor HD 5-20x50 & target shooting

The reticle in the Razor HD is just fine for paper, steel or meat.

The specifi questions you are asking are not good ones because if I need precision at 200 yards, I am going to be on 20x. If I don't have time to dial it up it's because speed is more important than ultimate precision. Also remember that the reticle is going to obscure the same amount of target at 6x as 20x.

The only time I wish for a finer reticle is on KYL type stages where I am trying to hit a 1/2" dot at 100 yards with no orienting marks around it. Some of the other members here have come up with a solution to that. They use the EBR-2 reticle and they dial 1mil down and 1mil right so they can hold on one of the tiny dots on the "Christmas Tree".

same here,. if you where closer id let ya try it out for a bit at diffrent ranges.

What do you consider long distances? I'm shooting 16" barrled 1:8 twist Larue OBR 556 using Sierra MK 69 grain and 77 grain.

Our range only goes to 800 yards.

Re: Vortex Razor HD 5-20x50 & target shooting

If I were you I'd get the 2.5-10 nightforce, 2.5-10 IOR, 10X USO, 10X Super Sniper HD, that sort of thing. They all provide enough magnification, adjustment and clarity for what you are doing and they have good usable reticles. You don't need to weight down a 16" 223 with mondo huge scope.

I certainly am uncertain how much magnification I need. My eyesight is not what it use to be. 56 year old eyes with astigmatism in both eyes, wear bifocal and need trifocals. I just want to get what ever will help me.

I recently sold Colt HBAR which I used to shoot accurately with iron sights, but I go so bad I need a scope.

I know during WWI and Russian Civil War people were making head shots at 1000m+ with Mosin-Nagant, factory ammo and iron sights. Fine. I'm not that great, and won't try to outdo those masters. If God intended me to use 10x fixed - He wouldn't have pointed me at Vortex Razor HD!

I don't think I'm going to wait for heavenly instruction but I will consider if it's given.

Well, if you can afford the Razor HD and it's what you want go for it. It's a great scope.

Well, if you're having some difficulties hearing heavenly instructions right now - this is the right group to get some earthly guidance while the Channels are being cleared!

Oh, and to answer the actual questions: the reticle is nicely visible at 5x, and does not obscure the target at 20x - plus it has empty center which helps to "fine-tune" the aim. I shot it from 100m to 900m, and hope to extend it to beyond 1000m if/when a suitable range turns up within driving distance.

I dislike them so much I currently have three of them.....(they are like rabbits)
